Abstract

329,457. British Cotton Industry Research Association, Platt Bros. & Co., Ltd., and Oxley, A. E. April 6, 1929. Building-motions.-In ring and like spinning frames the bobbins are built by imparting to the' ring rail a motion to effect the chase and a part of the lift, say about one half, and by imparting to the spindle rail a lowering motion to effect the remaining part of the lift, whereby bobbins of greater length than usual can be built in frames of approximately normal size. Such bobbins with a long length of yarn are advantageous in subsequent winding, weaving, or knitting operations and permit the direct beaming of warp yarns without intermediate winding, while the long balloon during spinning is advantageous in the production of low twist hosiery yarns. The ring rail is operated by a building-motion lever 19, Fig. 5, ratchet gearing 21, and chain 26, and the spindle rail is operated by ratchet gearing 85, of which the pawl 29 is actuated by an extension 27 from the lever 19, through worm and bevel gearing 42, 43, 45, 46, and shaft 47. The chain 26 actuates a quadrant 70 which is coupled to a rod 75 connected at intervals to axles 79, Fig. 3, carrying counterbalanced levers 81 from which the ring rails 72 are suspended by link-couplings 82, pendant bars 83 serving to guide the rail in a vertical path. The shaft 47 is provided with rack pinions 48 engaging racks 49 bolted to the spindle rails 37. Spindle apparatus; spindle and lifting rails; spindle-driving apparatus.-The spindle rails 37 are balanced bv weights 50 carried by the shaft 47 and are mounted on guide bars 38 carried by brackets 39, 40 from the spring pieces 41. The spindles are provided with elongated wharls 54, and forks may be provided to maintain the position of the driving-tapes during the descent of the spindles. Each tape drives four spindles and is tensioned by a pulley 57. The spindles are each mounted in two bearings in the rails, the lower comprising a sleeve 62, carried in a footstep 63 and the upper a sleeve 66, which is flexible at its lower end and projects into an oil reservoir 64 formed in the wharl and contains a roller bearing 67 at its upper end. Anti-ballooning arrangements; guards and protectors for machinery, arrangement and disposition of.-Long separators 88 are provided, and " fly protectors " plates 89 are preferably provided and may be made so as to be readily removable.
