Abstract

329,111. Henri, V. April 9, 1929. Spectroscopes.-In apparatus for the analysis of gases and vapours by means of their ultraviolet spectra the rays of ultra-violet light which have passed through the gas-container 19 are refracted by means of two prisms 27, 28 in succession which are constructed of a material which does not absorb the rays, the prisms being both rotatably mounted in the apparatus. The gascontainer is formed by partitioning off a length of the tube carrying the lenses and diaphragm by non-absorptive windows 23. The rays are received on a photographic or fluorescent plate 30, the angular position of which with respect to the rays can be varied, and a magnifying eyepiece 31 is provided for use with the fluorescent screen. As shown in Fig. 3, a diffraction grating 42 may be used to form a spectrum instead of the prisms.
