Abstract

328,280. Hoe &. Co., Ltd., R., (Hoe & Co., Inc., R.). Jan. 17, 1929. Folding paper.-In folding-apparatus for highspeed printing-presses the gripper mechanism carrying the sheet into folding position is operated electrically. As applied to rotary folding-apparatus in which a blade 14 tucks the sheet between rollers 15, 16 the leading end of a printed web W is clamped to the cylinder 3 between a bar 17 carried by endless chains 19 external to the cylinder 3 and an armature 18 on the cylinder 3. In order to energize the armature 18, contacts 33 thereon are periodically connected by a plate 38 to contacts 31 on the cylinder 3 connected to the source of current. The plate 38 is carried by a lever 41 pivoted at 42 to the inside wall of the cylinder and having a roller 46 running on a cam 45 which allows the plate 38 to complete and break the armature circuit at the required times under the action of a spring 44 pressing against the lever 41. The leading edge of the web W is carried around the cylinder 3 until the knife 10 on the cutting-cylinder 8 severs the, sheet therefrom, whereupon the sheet is released by the gripper mechanism and folded by means of the blade 14. Another similar gripper-mechanism clamps the severed end of the web and the operations are repeated. Bars 28 are provided on the chains 19 to prevent the trailing end of the sheet from dropping after it has been cut from the web. The chains 19 pass over the cutting-cylinders 8 and around guide cylinders 24 - - 26 one of which is mounted in a spring-pressed bearing 27 so as to keep the chains taut. A second web W may be associated with the web W.
