Specification of Letters Patent.
UUTTING AND fEQLZDING MACE-ENE,
Application files. June is, 1914. Serial No. 8%,153.
Be it known that we, SAMUEL G. Gloss, of
Chicago, Illinois, and RALPH C. SEYMOUR,
of Larchmont, New York, citizens of the United States, have made Improvements in Cutting and Folding Machines, of which the following is a specification".
The invention relates to machines auxiliary to printing presses and like machines, and more particularly to such machines wherein. a running web is received and cut and folded ;nd delivered or delivered. un-
. folded.
T he various objects of the invention will be in part obvious and in part will be set forth hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel parts, combinations, constructions, and improvements here-in shown and described.
. The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and to.-
' of some gether with the description serve'to explain the principles thereof. Of the drawings:Figure l is an elevation of a machine constituting an embodiment of the invention; Fig. 2 is an elevation h t ditl'erent form of machine;
eav similar to Fig. 2- but show .ing the parts in adifferent position, and
the machine delivering unfolded sheets; Big. 4; is a view on an enlarged scale of the central part of Fig 3, showing the mechanism in. different position and with certain/parts omitted; and F 5 is a fragmentary eleva ion on an nlarged scale showing C'n'erent form of web adjusting or compensating device.
. Referring by way of example to the embodiment shown in Fig. l of the drawings,
a suitable source of web supply is provided, such as a rotary perfecting printing press from which the web a: is run in to the folding and cutting machine 111 a well Known manner.
In the drawings the web m is shown running in at the upper left part of Fig. 1, being fed forward between feeding rolls 1 and 2 mounted upon the machine frame 3. 7
Means are provided by the invention for making a complete out or severanceof the web, such as is required in the clean cut edges for magazines and other-high class work. For this purpose the cutters are placed at very slight angle that 15,
obliquely, to the axis of their carriers, thereby giving a clean, shearing cut to the running web. In order that the shearing cut may be made in the running web by the transversely set blades and at the same time that the cut may be made straight across, that is, perpendicular to the side edges of the web, means are provided for taking up the web slightly at one side and just Sllfilaiently to compensate for the diagonal gain of the cut across the web as it runs. Said compensating take-up is greatest at one edge of the web and gradually diminishes to nothing at the opposite side edge of the web. in accordance with certain features of the invention such compensating device may be 'mounted upon some of the cutting or folding members, thereby dispensing with addi tional shafts and parts in the machine. Referring to the particular embodiment in Fig. 1,the web w is fed forward to a cylinder l having its shaft 5 jour'naled in the machine frame. Said cylinder 4 as embodied is provided with. two cutting blades 6 and 7 mounted in the periphery of the cylinder and having the oblique slant on set relatively to the axis of the cyhnder which has already been referred to. Coiiperating with the cylinder .5 is a cylinder 8, having its shaft 11 journaled in the machine frame.
. in the web is carried in part upon the cylinder 4, In the embodied form of such compensating device, upon the eylinder 4' there is formed, longitudinally along the cylinder, a depression 15, deepest at one end, and becoming gradually shallower and narrower and diminishing to nothing at the other end, as will be clear from Fig. 6; The size of said depression 15 is such as to just take up suliicient of the web to compensate for the oblique or shearing cut of the running web.
A. corresponding projection. ldiits into the depression 15 to force the webthereinto, and thus sheet the necesary take-up. The proalso to deliver the folded product.
jections 16 and corresponding depressions 15 are two 111 number, cooperating 1n pairs as w1ll be well understood,-one-pa1r being shown in Fig. 1 taking up or compensating out and back to effect the folding, in co-.
operation with the folding jaws upon. the cylinder 8. Each blade 20 is reciprocated by suitable connections and as embodied and slot connections 21 at each end of the blade. The slots 22 are formed in arms 23 fixed to a shaft 2 f mounted in the cylinder 4, the arms 23 being acted upon by springs 25. Fixed to each shaft 24 is an actuating arm 26, provided with a cam roller 27, cooperating with a cam 28 carried upon the machine frame. The folding jaws '30 into which the blades 20 fold, respectively, are likewise two in number and are carried upon the cylinder 8. Said folding jaws 30 are provided, respectively, with actuating shafts 31. The shafts 31 are provided with actuating arms 32 having cam rolls 33, and are acted upon by spring 34. A controlling cam 35 is carried upon the machine frame for 3 opening and closingthe folding jaws to receive the folds from the folding blades, and The folding blades 20 are shown conveniently mounted'in the depressions 15, the folding blades retracting or drawing in sufliciently far so, as not to interfere with the operation of thedepressions15 and projections 16. p
Suitable d livery devices are provided, and in the embodied form thereof, a delivery cylinder 40 has its shaft 41 rotatabl'y mounted in the machine frame. The cylinder &0 is provided with sets of grippers 42 and 43, which are provided with opening and closing means (not shown) to cause them to take the folded sheets from the folding jaws and to release or deliver them at the proper point. The cylinder 40 is shown delivering to an intermittent pocket delivery or belt conveyer 45 mounted upon rollers 46 and driven by suitable means (not shown). A stripper .47 insures the delivering of the sheet to the carrier 45.
The mann'er of operation of the mechanism just described is substantially as follows :-The web 00 is run in from the printing press or other source between the feeding rollers 1 and 2, and about the cylinder 4, and then about the lower part of the cylinder 8, thelead end of the web being folded into the bite of the foldings jaws 30. As the cutters 7 and 9, or 6 and 10, come tothe cutting pofeed rolls 48 and 49.
sition, or rather immediately prior thereto, the compensating depression 15 and the corresponding p jection 16 draw one side of the web back just sufiiciently to compensate for the oblique set of the cutters, and the P shearing cut of the running web is thus made actually straight across the web or perpen dicular to its side edges. The thus severed and folded sheet is delivered from the fold ing aws 30 to one of the sets of grippers 42 upon the cylinder 40and is then deposited upon the carrier 4-5. Thenewlea'd of the web, at the out just made, runs down between cylinders 4 and 8, and the succeeding folding blade 20 and folding jaw 30 fold the center ofuthe next sheetinto the folding jaw 30, and the next set of cutting bladessever the sheet as already described.
In the form of device shown in 'Figs. 2 and 3, the web isnot only cut into sheets but the sheets are likewise collected if desired. Referring particularly to the said figures, the web-w is run in between A pair of traveling carriers are provided for the compensating take-up device for the web, and in Figs. 2 and 3 said compensating take-up device is shown of rotary form, and' in Fig. 5 said device is shown in reciprocatory form. In Figs. 2 and 3 a cylinder 50 is provided with a compensating depression Blarranged longitudinally thereof, or parallel to its axis, like the compensating depressions '15 heretofore described. A coijperating cylinder 53 mounted upon a suitable shaft 54 is proyided with a compensating projection 55, extending longitudinally thereof or parallel to its axis. The projection 55 is like the projections 16 already described, and cooperates with the compensating depression 51 in a manner which will be understood upon the preceding description. 1 A cylinder is carried upon a shaft 6 journaled inthe machine frame. The cylinder 60 carries cutting blades 62 and 63, which cutting bladesare mounted at a slight angle or obliquely with respect to the axis of the cylinder 60. A cylinder GL coiiperateswith the cylinder 61, and-has cutting blades 65 and 66, cooperating respectively with the cutting blades 62 and 63 on the cylinder 60. Suitable guides 67 may beprovided to support and direct the web to the cylinders-'60 and 64. The cylinder 64 is provided with means for retaining the lead of the web, and so far as concerns many features of the inventionsaid means may be of any desired form. As shown herein such means comprises impaling pins 68 and air-acne as may be desired. In the embodied form of such means, the folding devices comprise reciprocating folding blades 80 mounted in the cylinder 64. Said folding blades have a pin and slot connection with the slots 81 in lever arms 82 at each end of the folding blades 80. The arms 82 are fixed, respectively, to rock shafts 83 carried by the cylinder (Sat. Springs 84: are connected to the arms 82. Fixed to the shafts 83 are actuating arms 85, provided with cam rolls 86. Said cam rolls cooperate, respectively, with suitable came 87 upon the machine frame, to

Folding jaws 92 are carried by rock shaft-s 93, said shafts 93 being mounted in the cylinder 90. Fixed to the respective rock shafts 93 is an actuating arm 94, carrying a cam roller 95; and acted upon by a spring 96. A cam 97 fixed upon the machine frame cotiperates with the cam roller 95 to open and close the folding jaws to take the. fold, and to deliver the sheet.
The form of delivery devices shown com prises an intermittent carrier or c'onveyer belt 98 carried upon rollers 99 and driven in a suitable manner (not shown).-
The form of fiat delivery embodied in said Figs. 2 and 3' comprises tapes 110 and 111 running over rollers 112 and 113, and constituting a sheet pathway conducting away the sheets from the cylinders and 64. Means are provided fordirecting the lead edge of the successive sheets between the tapes 110 and 111, to be conveyed away thereby. As embodied, a series of fingers 114 are carried in recesses in the cylinder 64:. Said fingers 11 1 are mounted on a rock shaft 115, said shaft being mounted in the cylinder 6%. Fixed to the rock shaft 115 is an actuating arm 116 provided with a cam roller 117. The caln roller 117 cooperates with a cam 118 on the machine frame.
The manner of operation ofthe mechanism just shown and described is substantially as follows :The web on runs in between the feed rollers 48 and 49. When it is desired to cut the sheets and deliver them fiat, the. mm 118 is moved into operative cylinder 64 and feeding it into the tape,
oathway 110 and 111. The cutters 63 and 66 or the cutters 62 and sever ,thesheet,
' which is then conveyed away. When it is The desired tocut and fold, the grippers on impal'ing pins 68 carry the lead end of the weh about the cylinder 64, and the folding blades fold the center of the sheet into the folding jaws 92. The sheet is then released by the grippers or impaling pins 68 to the cylinder and by said cylinrleris delivered to the conveyer 98. "When it. is desired to collect, the folding blades and folding jaws 80 and 92 respectively, and the grippers or impaling pins 68 are arranged to operate intermittently and periodically so as to take upon the cylinder 64 two or more sheets in super-imposition and then fold them off together in. the manner al- 1 ready described for a-single sheet.
From all the foregoing it will be understood that a machine has been provided embodying' theobjects and advantages herein setforth, together with other objects and advantages. It will be understood also that changes may 'be made from the mechanisms shown and described within the scope of the accompanying claims, without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
