Compound piston pumps ; pump-actuating mechanism ; regulating compression.-A circular flange having a cam profile c is rotated by a shaft a and reciprocates a cylinder block f, formed with a peripheral cam e engaging the cam c, the cylinders in which move over fixed pistons h, j. A coiled spring k keeps the cams in contact. The compressor is fitted to a motor car having a compressed air starter D. The shaft a replaces the starting handle, and is fitted with a claw intended to be engaged with the driving claw or coupling d of the starter. Two stages of compression are shown, air being drawn into the low-pressure cylinder through an inlet g<1> on the intake stroke, and discharged through a valve-controlled passage in the cylinder block to an expansion chamber in the block on the compression stroke; on the intake stroke it passes to the high pressurecylinder from which it is delivered through valvecontrolled passages j<2>, b<2> to a compressed air bottle or reservoir for the starter. The cams give four strokes per revolution, the intake strokes being faster than the compression strokes. A latch n is arranged opposite a recess f<2> in the cylinder block at the end of the compression stroke; it is pressed upwards by a spring o and downward by the delivery pressure, which may be transmitted through oil. A retaining ball p normally holds the latch in its upper position. At the critical pressure the ball is forced aside and the latch holds the cylinder block in a fixed position, stopping compression; the spring o returns the latch when the pressure falls sufficiently. Axial passages in the cylinder block allow entry of oil which is distributed centrifugally.
