Abstract

328,096. Imray, O. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). March 22, 1929. Electrodes. - Active material for alkaline accumulators is extruded to form bands, tubes, threads &c. which are then subdivided to form tablet, small tubes, threads &c. which are used in the usual manner. Glycerine, glycol or other viscous liquid soluble in water may be added to the active material, and the latter mav be extruded directly into the pockets of the electrode. The active material may consist of nickel hydroxide and graphite mixed with glycerine, or of iron oxide, iron powder and oxide of mercury mixed with glycerine or glycol. Instead of the glycerine &c., a solution of alkali may be used to moisten the active material. In another example a mixture of glycerine, iron oxide and mercury oxide is used, and a further example comprises glycerine, cadmium oxide and iron oxide. The extrusion press may be of the helicoid or piston type, and the active material may be pressed into briquettes before insertion in the press. The die through which the material is extruded has a long passage so that the material is kept under pressure for some time to ensure sufficient strength in the extruded band &c. Fig. 1 shows one form of die. As the latter becomes heated during the operation it is either changed frequently or provided with a cooling device. The extruded material may be surrounded by a perforated tube of nickelled steel, and extruded tubes may be lined with a metal core or with thin perforated nickelled sheet iron. The materials may also be extruded directly into the tubes or pockets of the electrode. The said pockets are held in a gripping device which may consist of two rollers. The lower halves of the pockets are guided by the lower roller, the active material being pressed into these halves by the upper roller. The pockets are then closed. If the material is to be extruded into tubes the latter are held in holes in a rotary drum which is given an intermittent motion. Specification 13656/00 is referred to.
