Abstract

1288236 Electrode plates WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC CORP 18 Sept 1969 [2 Oct 1968 (3)] 46093/69 Heading H1B An electrode plate for an alkaline battery cell comprises a plaque of intermingled metal fibres joined at their points of contact by metal diffusion bonds and active material substantially uniformly distributed within the plaque. Metal diffusion bonds are limited by definition to those formed by heat only without the application of pressure other than any necessary to ensure physical contact of the fibres. The fibres may be of steel or nickel. Before impregnation with active material, the plaque may be coated with Cu, Ni, Ag, Zn or Cd and/or etched with nitric acid The active material may be introduced by vacuum impregnation with molten metal salt, e.g. Ni(NO 3 ) 2 . 6H 2 O, Cd(NO 3 ) 2 .4H 2 O or Ni(NO 3 ) 2 .6H 2 O: Co(NO 3 ) 2 .6H 2 O. The nitrate may then be converted to hydroxide by electrolysis using the plate as negative electrode in hot NaOH or KOH solution. The plate may then be washed and dried and the impregnationprecipitation-wash-dry cycle repeated until the plaque is sufficiently loaded with active material. To further increase the loading, the plates may be charged, and optionally also discharged, before each loading step. The invention may be used to make Ag, Ni, Zn, Cd and Fe electrodes. Fig. 4 shows a sealed accumulator comprising positive plate 40, negative plate 41, and nylon cloth separators 42. The negative plate may have a greater capacity than the positive plate. The electrode roll is held in position by polypropylene washers 45 and encased in nickelplated steel 46 with positive terminal 47 projecting through seal 48.
