Abstract

327,476. Marks, Sir G. C., (American Thermos Bottle Co.). Jan. 14, 1929. Endless-belt-conveyers with slat and lath carriers.-Relates to a machine for handling bottles, particularly double-walled vacuum bottles containing a silver solution in the annular space, to cause a uniform precipitation of silver, to facilitate or accelerate the precipitation, and to prepare the bottles for the final treatment, and comprises a movable carrier for advancing the bottles provided with spaced rollers adapted to be rotated to rotate the bottles as they are carried forward. The carrier consists of a pair of endless chains carried by sprocket-wheels on shafts 11, 12 driven by a motor M, and provided at regular intervals with shafts carrying rollers 24 and supporting-wheels 23 running on tracks on the frame of the machine. The bottles T are placed between adjacent rollers 24, the central sections of which are slighbly tapered to form shoulders 27 to hold the bottles in alignment. Supported on pulleys 28 and rollers 33, 34 is a belt 29 engaging one end of the rollers 24, and driven continuously from a motor M<1>. The open necks of the bottles are supported by the rollers opposite a longitudinal nozzle 43 from which heated air is blown so that the precipitation of the silver is facilitated. A cover 44 may be provided to retain the hot air around the bottles. The movement of the belt 29 causes the rotation of the rollers 24 and consequently of the bottles, so that the silver is uniformly precipitated. The bottles, when they reach the position T', are removed, emptied, filled with water, and replaced on the carrier where they are again rotated to ensure thorough rinsing. To ensure that all the bottles are removed after silvering is complete, a pivoted arm 49 carrying a contact extends into the path of movement of the bottles, so that if a bottle remains on the carrier the circuit of the motor M is broken. This results in the stoppage of the carrier: the belt 29, however, is still actuated by the motor M<1> so that the bottles continue to rotate.
