327,386. Bellamy, A. R., and Ruston & Hornsby, Ltd. Jan. 1, 1929. Separating liquids by gravity; filters having loose filtering materials. - In an apparatus for cleaning waste and other oil, of the type comprising an upper vessel a for the waste oil and a lower vessel b for the clean oil, with an interposed filtering vessel c, the upper vessel is constructed to cause the flow of only surface oil to the filtering vessel by providing the upper vessel with a compartment containing towards the top a channelled grid o. Waste oil is passed into a settling chamber i where it flows into an intermediate compartment j and rises therein, the oil flowing over the top edges of U-shaped channels o, Fig. 2, communicating at one end with a gutter s leading into a storage chamber k. The oil then falls through a pipe z into the filter chamber c. The upper and lower vessels a, b are held firmly together by three vertical clamping plates e to one of which the filter chamber c is attached.
