Abstract

Mould and core materials.-Oxidation of magnesium in casting is prevented by adding to the moulding sand, instead of or in addition to one or more of the protective substances referred to in the parent Specifications, a fluoride which is not hygroscopic or is kept stable, in the presence of heat and moisture, by the addition of another substance. The sand may be mixed with 3 to 5 per cent of ammonium hydrogen fluoride or ammonium silico fluoride the mixture being stored for some time, in the latter case, before use ; or 5 per cent of ammonium fluoride mav be used with 3 per cent of oxalic acid to absorb any decomposition products. This material on coming into contact with the molten metal produces a non-oxidizing gas which forms a protective layer on the casting, as described in Specification 254,302, [Class 82 (ii), Washing granular &c.]. For small castings up to 15 per cent of one of the above substances may be used without other protective substance.
