Abstract
326,461. British Celanese, Ltd., and Taylor, W. I. Sept. 28, 1928. Apparatus for making filaments.-For the production of artificial filaments of large crosssection, a number of artificial filaments extruded from a plurality of spinning orifices are by means of a fluid stream caused to converge together and to unite while they are setting and are therefore in a sticky or tacky condition. The method is particularly applicable to the dry spinning process using solutions of cellulose acetate or other esters or ethers of cellulose; but it may also be applied to the wet spinning of solutions such as nitrocellulose, viscose, or cuprammonium cellulose. It is convenient to maintain around the filaments, prior to their convergence and adhesion, a medium rich in solvent. For effecting the desired convergence of the filaments, the latter mav be passed through a double cone device 4, Fig. 1, mounted in the cell at a short distance below the spinning nozzle 2; air is blown through the space between the inner and outer cones 5, 6, the outer cone preferably extending beyond the inner. As an alternative a sleeve or hood 15, Fig. 2, may be adjustably mounted on the candle 16, the lower portion of the hood being closed by a hinged plate 18 in order to maintain within the hood an atmosphere rich in solvent vapour; the plate is slotted to permit the passage of the filaments, and in the centre of the plate there is provided an incomplete ring 21 having a number of perforations or slots 22 or a single slot through which inwardly-directed jets of air are projected on the filaments. The united filaments may be withdrawn through an opening 10, Fig. 1, in the side of the cell, passed round a feed roller 11 which may be run at a speed sufficient to stretch the filaments and finally wound on a roller 12. The filaments obtained may be used to produce figured, pattern or other effects in woven or knitted materials, and they may be used in conjunction with other artificial threads of the same or different types or with natural filaments or fibres; they may be doubled or twisted with other yarns. Specification 322,557 is referred to.
