Abstract

325,824. From, V. C., Rowley, C. D., and Larsky, A. W. Nov. 23, 1928. Radiations, treating substances with.-Liquids and organic substances are exposed to the combined action of rays from two different lamps or sets of lamps providing respectively rays shorter and rays longer than those in the average visible part of the spectrum. The rays are caused to impinge on the substance from opposite directions and the action takes place in the presence of ozone. A temperature of between 0 and 15‹ C. is preferably maintained. The substances after irradiation may be exposed to visible light in the presence of ozone. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, lamps C, E, respectively of the two different types, are arranged above and below a chamber B fitted with shelves G, screens D, F being provided to cut off visible light rays. A cooling apparatus J, J, is provided together with a motor H which may drive a fan or a generator of high tension current. In the modification shown in Fig. 3 lamps C, E of the different types are arranged in opposed pairs in the upper compartment B of a cabinet which has also an intermediate cooled storage compartment B<2> and a lower compartment B' for a motor. The ozone employed may be that produced by the operation of the lamps or may be supplied additionally.
