Abstract
325,554. White, A. E., (Aluminium, Ltd.). Aug. 21, 1928. Moulds; clamping and guiding moulds.-Distortion in multi-part iron, steel or other permanent moulds, for casting aluminium and its alloys and metals having higher melting points, is avoided by connecting the mould parts so that they are free to expand relatively and by forming them so that heat from the metal cast raises them all to substantially the same temperature. This is effected by adjusting the wall thickness according to the amount of heat received at each point from the molten metal and the amount of heat radiating surface. Should parts, such as the lower fixed parts 4, 5, 6, Fig. 3, of a mould for casting a brake shoe 19, tend to become overheated copper plugs 41 are used to conduct the heat to the surface and air gaps, or other thermal breaks, may be arranged between adjacent parts. Should parts, such as the hinged halves 16, tend to remain too cool risers 20 are formed therein. The halves 16 are carried by a pin 13 fixed in the base 1 and are clamped about the parts 4, 5, 6 by a - lever 33, Fig. 1, and cam lever 38. The parts 4, 5, 6 are mounted on the base by studs 7, 11, 9 and pins 8, 12, 10 so as to allow slight movement in the plane of Fig. 3 relative to the base and to each other. Cores 23, 25, 26 and handles 40 may also be provided.
