Abstract
325,373. Widall H. Feb. 2, 1929. Vibration-dampers.-Vehicle steering-dampers of the friction-disc type are formed with raised portions or undulating faces which are adapted to co-operate in varying the pressure between the friction elements during the steering movements, so as to obtain a maximum frictional effect when the vehicle is driving straight ahead, and to reduce or eliminate the friction for larger displacements of the steering mechanism in either direction. In the example shown, a box member 8 is formed with upstanding plates 3, 4 by means of which it is clamped below the axle. Discs 12 of frictional material are interposed between movable metal discs 11, 11<a> and non-rotatable parts consisting of the top wall of the box 8 and a plate 10 which is free to move vertically. The movable discs 11, 11<a> are formed integral with arms 13 which are connected to the track rod of the vehicle so that they follow the steering movements. Projections 16 on the lowermost disc 11<a> bear, when the vehicle is steering straight ahead, on similar projections 16a formed on a non-rotating plate 10<a> which is forced upwards by a starshaped spring plate 18. The initial pressure on the discs may be adjusted by means of the nut 20 screwed on the centre bolt 9, a lower closure plate 19 for the box 8 being interposed between the nut 20 and the spring 18. The arms 13 work in slots in the curved side 15 of the box.
