Abstract

313,205. McVicar, R. G. March 9, 1928. Steering-gear.-In steering dampers for motor vehicles, in which the frictional resistance to movement is effective only at or near the straight ahead driving position, the friction surfaces are separated preferably by cams at other positions. In the, construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, frictional material is interposed between a lower disc 10 integral with or secured to the axle 23 and an upper disc 11 which is rotated by means of a telescopic arm 30 pivoted to the transverse steering or track rod 24. A central bolt 15 and a spring force the discs into engagement with the frictional material. A smaller hard steel disc 12 is riveted centrally to the lower disc 10 and is formed with three conical holes 19 which in the straight steering position coincide with recesses 21 in the upper disc 11, a hard steel ball 20 being then movable freely in each of the holes and recesses. When the wheels are deflected sufficiently in either direction, the balls ride up the conical sides of the holes on to the top of the plate 12 and separate the frictional surfaces.
