Jacquards for weaving Brussels carpets &c. comprise vertically-movable needles or parts c positioned by a pattern surface h and each provided with an abutment f for controlling selector needles c according to the height at which the vertical needles e are positioned. Each needle e operates only one or no needles c in a corresponding vertical row of the selector needles c for the harness threads, so that only one warp thread in each reed dent can at any time be raised. The needles e are moved to and from the jacquard face plate b by a frame d carrying the pattern cylinder and as the frame recedes from the plate b, the needles e are all raised by an arm o on a shaft p which is rocked by the engagement with a fixed cam s of a roller on an arm r. To vary the positions to which the vertical needles subsequently fall, they may have projections e<1> - - e4 of varied lengths to co-operate with rows of holes h<1> - - h<4> in the pattern surface. If all the projections on a particular needle register with holes, this needle may be arranged to fall to such a position that its abutment is below the corresponding row of vertical needles, so that no needle in this row is operated. In a modification, each needle has a series of shoulders to cooperate with slots of varied lengths in the pattern surface. This may comprise a chain of cards or a continuous paper strip &c. The invention is shown applied to a five frame jacquard, the upper four horizontal needles c corresponding to the top frame and the lower four to the bottom frame, alternate needles e having their abutments f so positioned as to co-operate respectively with the upper and lower four needles c.
