Abstract

Shelters for animals.-To lessen the risk of the crushing of sucking pigs by the sow, the floor 5 of the cage has pivoted to each side a flap board 11 to which is also pivoted a trough 13, the flap boards and troughs being suspended by cords 26, 23 from the ends of pivoted levers 22, the other ends of which are adjustably fastened at 27 to weighted slides 14. The cage is formed of end frames 4 and intermediate frames 2 joined by section bars 6, 7, the lower part being provided with open partitions 8 through which access is obtained by the sucking pigs to the teats. As the sow lies down on the floor 5, the weighted slides 14 fall, raising the flap boards and troughs on each side, in which are the sucking pigs, into the dotted positions, so that the pigs are in a correct position for feeding. Should the sow rise, her back comes against the battens 16 on the weighted slides and raises them, thus allowing the troughs to fall, whereupon the sucking pigs roll down the flap boards out of the way. The rear floor board 28 may be pivoted to the main floor 5 and be supported on the flap boards by cross bolts 29, so that it rises and falls therewith.
