Pedals. - Pedal-crank driving-mechanism in . which the pedal is adapted to oscillate universally on the end of a lateral spindle 4, Figs. 1 and 2, carried by the crank arm, comprises on the end of the spindle 4 a head 5 of spherical form, or provided with spherical surfaces, and engaged by ball or other bearings 6 mounted in cups 8, 9<a>. The cups may be carried by two plates 7, 9, which bridge the pedal frame 1, 2 and are united by bolts 10, the 'two sets of balls 6 being separated by a ring 2a. The apertures in the cup 9<a> and inner pedal plate 2 for the passage of the spindle 4 are enlarged to allow of the lateral tilting of the pedal. In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the cups 8, 9<a> are secured by a surrounding sleeve 13 in a sheet-metal box-like housing 12, at the ends of which rubber tread blocks 16 are bolted or riveted. A toe-clip 17 may be provided. Other forms of pedal mounted in a similar way are described, one being of stirrup form. Instead of the head 5 being spherical, it may be formed with a pair of symmetrical concave spherical surfaces to receive the two sets of balls 6. In order to exclude dust, water, &c. from the bearings, one of the cups carries a part-spherical plate 18, Figs. 1 and 2, or is formed with a spherical flange en. gaging a spherical surface on a flange 21 either formed integral with the spindle 4, as shown, or consisting of a ring fitted tightly on a greased leather &c. ring mounted between a pair of flanges on the spindle 4. In another form of dust-excluding device, a part-spherical flange carried by the spindle 4 engages between a spherical projection on the pedal frame and a similarly-shaped greased annular washer inside the frame.
