Abstract
324,843. Dehn, F. B., (Mosinee Paper Mills Co.). March 5, 1929. Blow-down apparatus. - Scum and sediment collecting in a chamber 5 connected to the scum pipe and the bottom blow-down by pipes 7, 6 are blown off through a valve 12 automatically actuated in accordance with changes in the temperature or conductivity of the water in the chamber due to the accumulation of sludge. A temperature responsive element in the chamber is connected to a switch 16 which may be set to complete at any desired point a current through a relay 17 operating the blow off valve 12, which is thus opened when the temperature of the water around the temperature responsive element falls below a certain point due to the presence of sludge. The operation of the blow-off valve may be controlled directly by the heat responsive element. In a modification, the primary circuit of the relay 17 is completed through electrodes projecting into the sludge chamber, the current in the circuit being strengthened when the conductivity of the water is increased by accumulated sludge.
