Abstract

Non-reactive steering-mechanism.-Relates to steering-gear of the kind in which the steering shaft A has a helical thread B<1> engaged by a member on an arm C operating the steering road wheels, and comprises a block F having bearing surfaces in contact with the helical thread constituted by separately-formed hardened members G each of which has a flat face bearing on the thread while its back is curved and fits in a corresponding recess in the block so that the member can adjust itself to the helical thread surface. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 3, each member G is a half ball engaging the sides of a helical groove B<1>, and the block F is. freely mounted in the rocker arm C. End pressure on the block is resisted by a projection H<2> formed on a removable cover H<1> of the casing enclosing the gear. Modifications are described in which (1) cylindrical pins with flat faces are used instead of the balls G, (2) the block F is fixed to the rocker arm, (3) the flattened balls or pins engage the opposite sides of a raised helical thread, and (4) the thread instead of being formed on a cylindrical member is formed on a member shaped either like a barrel or like an hour-glass.
