Screw fans.-Drying - apparatus suitable for use in hair-dressing comprises a bottle-shaped casing with a motor driven fan mounted therein but spaced apart from the walls of the casing so as to leave an annular passage, and an air heater near the smaller and outlet end of the casing. A cylinder 4a containing the electric motor 5 is attached by a conical portion 4b to a smaller cylinder 4c which houses the electric heater 6 and is provided with an outlet end 4d of still smaller diameter. The motor 5 drives a fan 7 made up of six blades of slightly curved form inclined at approximately 25‹ to the axis of the fan, or it may be of any other form. The motor is supported by pillars or vanes 8 as, for example, by four vanes in diametrically opposed pairs : the annular space surrounding the motor being approximately equal in cross-sectional area to that of the air outlet. These vanes may be of stream line form and solid, or in the form of plates bent round the pillars supporting the motor. The electric heater 6 may be of any suitable form, e.g., resistance wire wound round a refractory former of cruciform shape; it may project into the conical portion 4b, and it is preferably detachably connected to the plate 6a on the motor case by spring contacts 6b. A bowlshaped outlet 11 with a wire mesh cover 11b and an air diffuser 11a such as a perforated plate may be detachably attached to the reduced portion 4d. Back draught from the larger end of the casing can be avoided by the use of the frusto conical portion 10a attached to the sleeve 10 or formed in one with the casing. A grill 10b may also be provided. The whole contrivance is rotatably supported on a ball and socket joint 12 at one end of an arm, the other end of which is universally jointed to a suitable standard; or, if desired, the contrivance can be supported from a ceiling rose, &c. One form of supporting arm consists of two spaced members having seatings at their ends for the two ball joints and screw means for adjustment purposes. Rheostats to regulate the motor and/or the heater can be mounted on the standard. The apparatus may be used in the heating and ventilating of rooms; or the bowl-shaped member 11 may be replaced by nozzle arrangements and propellor blades such as described in Specification 313,894, [Class 81 (ii), Medical &c. appliances].
