APPLICATIONFILED SEPT 11 1920.

ATTORNEYS.
ELBERT A. GORBIN, J'RQOF GLENSIDE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicatio n filed September 1, 1920. Serial No. 407,366;
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ELBERT AJCORBIN,
. Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Glenside, in the county of Montgomery, State of Pennsylvania, have invented. a new and useful Heater, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a heater formed of separate bodies adapted to be heated and have air drawn thereinto, then discharged into an apartment or other place of use in a plurality of great volumes.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawing but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied,and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a heater embodying my invention- Figs. 2 and 3 represent'vertical sections of portions of other embodiments thereof.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings.
1 designates a chambered body which is open below and provided at the top with the neck 2 which is open above. i/Vithin said body is the dome 3 which serves as a diaphragm forming with the body 1 the flue 4 which is openbelow as at 5 as the outlet of the flue. v
The neck 2 of the body 1 has secured to it the arms 6 whichare attached to the pipe 7 the latter being connected with the ceiling, wall, etc., of an apartment containing the device and is adapted to receive gas from a suitable source of supply, it being noticed that the body 1 is suspended from said gas pipe and secured thereto by the intermediate means.
The dome 3 is suspended from the body 1 and secured thereto by the brackets 8 and so supported. 9 designates the base of the device, the same being concave forming a chambered body which is suspended from the dome 8 and secured thereto by the brackets 10 which are connected with said base and dome, the base being positioned relatively to the dome to form between them at their peripheries the outlet flue 11 which is open below.
In the base 9 is the opening 12 which comprises an inlet for air of the apartment into the chamber 13 formed by the dome 3.
Secured in the base 9 andrising therefrom above the air inlet 12 is the conical shaped body 14 which is open at the, top and forms a deflector for air to the gas burner 15 which is above said deflector, said burner being connected with the gas conveylng pipe 16, the latter extending. from the gas conveying pipe 7, and being provlded with a pilot light such as 17 for evident purposes. In the deflector 14 and in terposed between the burner 15 and the bottom of the base 9 is the shield 14* which conslsts of aplate secured to said base by suit able legs or brackets and rises abovethc opening'12 in said base so that air may reach said burner through said opening, while said shield may receive drippings other objects dropping from the burner. Connected with the lower end of the pipe 7 is the electrically operated motor 18 whose driving shaft is adapted to rotate the blades of a suction fan 19 whichis secured thereto, said fan occupying the chamber 20 of the neck 2 of the body 1 and of the upper part of the latter, and being operative in said chamber so as to draw into the same through the open top of the neck, the air of theapartment above said body.
Connected with the pipe 7 above the motor 18 are the electric lights 21 and the electric conductors 22 which are directed to said lights in any suitable manner.
23 designates a glass or other transparent shade for the lights 21, the same surround mg the latter and being supported on the neck 2 of the body 1, it being adapted to transmit the light of the electrlc lights into the apartment.
The operation is as follows The burner 15 is lighted, the fan'19 rotated by the current applied to the motor 18 and the electric lights 21 are turned on.
The chamber 13 is heated by the burner 15 and with it the dome 3, hence air in the apartment below the device is drawn upward through the inlet 12 in the base into the deflector 1% and subjected to the heat of the burner and injected into the chamber 13 where it mingles with the hot products of combustion in said chamber, thus producing a large volume of hot air which is deflected by the dome 3 to the outlet flue 11 and directed by the latter into the apartment. Then air in the apartment above the device is drawn by the fan 19 into the neck 2 of the body 1 and through the shade 32 if employed ATET OFFICE.
Patented May 31, 1921;
and driven into the chamber and the flue 4 where it is heated by the dome 3 so that a large volume of hot air is formed and directed into the flue 4 from which it is injected or discharged at the outlet 5 of said flue into the apartment or other place of use, it being noticed that owing to the plurality of volumes of hot air injected into the apartment, etc., the latter will be effectively heated, while the impure air ordinarily 1n the apartment will be heated and so in a measure sterilized in the chambers 13 and 20 and so returned to the apartment, it being noticed that air primarily impure has been taken into the device at different altitudes of the apartment and so returned therefrom in pure condition. I
In Fig. 2 I show an oil burner 24 in lieu of the gas burner 15. In this case the base. 9 supports the reservoir 25 or oil into which dips the wick 26, the latter leading by the tube 27 to the interior of said burner and serving to supply the burner with oil by capillary attraction as evident. When the burner is ignited it heats the dome 8 and chamber 13, as in the case of Fig. 1, the same being true of the electric burner 28 in Fig. 3, when the current is turned on.
The device shown in Fig. 2 is supported on the stand 29, and that shown in Fig. 3 is supported on the bracket 30, but as to the manner of supporting the device in either Fi s. 1, 2 and 3, I do not limit myself.
laving thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is V V 1. An air-heating device composed of a chambered body open at top and bottom, an imperforate dome beneath said body and spaced therefrom, means beneath said dome to heat the same, and an air suction device within the body above said dome, the said body and dome having outlets at their peripheries upon opposite sides of the dome.
2. An air-heating device composed of a chambered'body open at top and bottom, an imperforate dome beneath said body and spaced therefrom, means beneath said dome to heat the same, an air suction device within the body above said dome, the said body and dome having outlets at their peripheries upon opposite sides of the dome, and a base beneath the dome and inclosing the heating means.
3. An air-heating device composed of a chambered body open at top and bottom, a dome beneath said body and spaced therefrom, means beneath said dome to heat the same, an air suction device withinthe body above said dome, the said body and dome having outlets at their peripheries upon opposite sides of the dome, a base beneath the dome and inclosing the heating means, and an open-ended deflector in said base beneath the heating means.
4:. An alr-heating device composed of a chambered body open at top and bottom, a dome beneath said body and spaced therefrom, means beneath said dome to heat the same, an air suction device within the body above said dome, the said body and dome having outlets at their peripheries upon opposite sides of the dome, a base beneath the dome and inclosing the heating means, and an open-ended deflector in said base beneath the heating means, said base having an air inlet opening in its bottom, and a shield over said opening.
5. An air-heating device composed of a chambered body open at top and bottom, a dome beneath said body and spaced therefrom, means beneath said dome to heat the same, an air suction device within the body above said dome, the said body and'dome having outlets at their peripheries upon opposite sides of the dome, a base beneath the dome and inclosing the heating means, and an open-ended deflector in said base beneath the heating means, said base having an air inlet opening in its bottom, and a shield over said opening, said base and its accessories being supported from said dome.
