Splitting-apparatus.-A machine for partly splitting leather &c. boot-soles, in which a pair of feed-rolls in a single cycle of the machine are rotated to feed a workpiece on to a splitting knife and are then reversed to feed the workpiece out of the machine, has (a) a die portion on one feed roll to vary locally the thickness of the divided portion of the workpiece near the end of the split, (b) means for varying the length of the split without altering the position of the local thickening relatively to the end of the split, (c) means for relaxing the pressure on the feed rolls during the reversed movement. The roll 35 has a recessed periphery and is carried by an arm 38 pivoted behind the knife 34 on a rod 13. A calibrated screw 40 forms an abutment. The lower roll 43 is resiliently mounted in a slide set at about 30‹ to the vertical and is adjusted by a handwheel 60 through a worm 58 which rotates a wheel attached to an eccentric shaft 56. An indicator 62 shows the setting of the lower roll. On the return movement of the feed rolls a spring moves a rod 59 axially and the worm 58, acting as a rack, rotates the shaft 56 to relax the pressure on the lower feed roll. The rolls are geared together and driven by a quadrant 25 oscillated by a crank 9. The length of the feed movement is varied by adjusting a connecting rod 10 on a slotted quadrant arm 11. When the crank 9 is in its mid-position the slot 14 is concentric with the crank-shaft 6 so that adjustment of the stroke does not alter the relative position of the knife and rolls at the end of the feed-in movement.
