My invention relates to improvements in automatic feed. mechanisms for punch presses and the like, particularly for feeding flat or rolled strips.
One object of the invention is to convert circular motion into rectilinear motion along a line parallel to the axis of its circular motion.
Another object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, efficient automatic feed mechanism than can be attached to and used on any standard punch press with little expense, and that will automatically feed the material past the dies.

Number I is a conventional punch press with a bed plate 2 and shaft 3. Attached to shaft 3 is a circular plate 4. Affixed to this plate and revolvable about the centre of the shaft is a second plate 5. Plate 5 is fastened'to plate 4 by means of two bolts and washers 66. Slots '|1 shaped as segments of a circle in plate 5 allow it to be partially rotated about the centre of the shaft. Slidably mounted on plate 5 is a block 8. This block is held in a rectangular opening in' plate 5 by two screws 9 and [0, one of which (9) is threaded through the plate 5 and into the block 8 and held in place by the block nut H; the other I0) is threaded through the plate and pressed against the block 8. By screwing in or out 9 and ID, the block 8 is therefore adjustable in the slot in 5 and can be held rigidly in place in any position along this slot.
Aflixed to the block 8 is a stud E3 on which is mounted a collar l4, rotatable about the centre of the stud I3 and .provided with two studs l5l5 which form, with the forked link IS, a universal joint. The other end of 16, which is also forked, is attached to studs on a sleeve l1 slidably mounted on a round bar [8 which in turn is rigidly fastened to the bed plate 2. This forked end of I6 is free to rotate on the studs on sleeve ll. One end of a second arm IS with forks on either end is mounted by a pivot at the centre of IS, and the other end is mounted on a sleeve 20. This sleeve 20 is free to rotate on the bar I8 but is fixed as regards endwise motion by the supports 2! and 22 fastening the bar to the punch press.
The links are so proportioned in length that when the actuating stud i3 is set in the slot at the dead centre of the stroke of the punch press the bar 59 forms an angle of 45 with the axis of the shaft of the punch press, and equal angles of with the bar Hi. This gives the best results in practice. Considerable variations in these angles accomplish the same results. 5
Fixed to the sleeve I1 is a third stud 23. To this stud is fastened a bar 24, which is attached to the sliding bar 25 by another stud 26. This bar 25 is free to slide longitudinally in a slot 21 in bar 24. A tension spring 28 between studs 23 10 and 26 serves to move the bar 25 back and forth when the press is in operation.
To this reciprocatingbar 25, which is attached by suitable supports to the bed press, is attached a carriage for carrying the material to be 15 punched. An arm 29, provided with slots to allow adjustment along the bar 25, is connected to the carriage by a slot in the projection 30. This carriage consists of the parts 3|, 32,33, 34, 35, 36, and 31, held together by the bolts 38 and 39. 20 These bolts slide in the slots 40 and 4! in the guide strip 42. This guide strip is held between the stripper plate 44 and the die 41. The carriage carries two feed pawls 43-43 to carry the material forward. Fastened to the guide strip 2. 42 are two spring keeper strips 4545 to hold the material in place in its forward position. A screw 46, attached to the sliding plate 25 in line with bar I 8, limits the forward movement of IS and consequently the feed of the material.
The operation of the device is as follows: As the shaft of the punch press revolves, the upper end of I6 moves around in a circle. The sleeve I! oscillates about the shaft L8 and also moves back and forth in a straight line, the link I9 producing a pantographic motion.
The length of the feed is determined by adjusting the screws 8 and 9 moving the centre of the stud l3 towards or away from the centre of the crank. This length can be more closely adjusted by the screw 46 which prevents the full forward movement of the carriage. The timing of the motion can be adjusted with reference to the position of the die by adjusting the flange 5 about the centre of the shaft, thus ensuring that this motion is made only after the die is clear of the material.
The effect of this mechanism is that the sleeve ll moves in a straight line in the same direction as the axis of the shaft of the punch press; The link 59 can be omitted, but a downward thrust on top of the sleeve I1 and the bar l8 will ensue. The use of the link I 9 is therefore preferable.
While, in order to comply with the statute, the invention has been described in language more 'or lessspecific as tostructural features, it is understood that the invention is not limited to the specific features shown, butthat the means and construction herein disclosed comprise the preferred form of'several modes of putting the invention into effect, and the invention is therefore claimed in any of the forms or modificai l. A feed for punch presses and the like, comprising a link, one end of which is connected eccentrically to the shaft of the press and free to oscillate about and perpendicular to the axis of that shaft, and a second link one end of which is pivoted to the first link, the other end being attached to the bed of the press and free to oscillate about an axis parallel to the axis of the shaft, a carriage for the work, and flexible means to connect the carriage to the free end of the first link.

A feed for punch presses and the like, com- 7 prising a link, one end of which is connected eccentrically to the shaft of the press, and free to oscillate about and perpendicular to the axis of that shaft, the other end of the link being slidably mounted on a guide causing it to move in a line parallel to the axis of the shaft, and being free to oscillate in and. at right angles to the axis of the guide, a second link one end of which is pivoted to the first link between the ends thereof, the other end of which is fixed to the bed and free to oscillate about the axis of the guide, a work carriage and flexible means for attaching the same to the free end of the first link.
16. A feed for punch presses and the like, comprising a link, one end of which is connected eccentrically to the shaft of the press and free to oscillate about and perpendicular to the axis of that shaft, a guide for the other end of the link attached to the bed of the punch press in a line parallel to the axis of the shaft, the link being slidably mounted on such guide and being free to oscillate in and at right angles to the axis of the guide, a work carriage, means for attaching the work carriage to the sliding end of the first link, means for varying the timing of the feed with reference to the stroke, and means for adjusting the amount of motion of said carriage.
17 A feed for punch presses and the like, comprising a link, one end of which is connected eccentrically to the shaft of the press and free to oscillate about and perpendicular to the axis of that shaft, and a second link one end of which is pivoted to the first link, the other end being attached to the bed of the press and free to 'oscillate about an axis parallel to the axis of the shaft, a carriage for the work, means to connect the carriage to the free end of the first link, means for varying the timing of the feed with reference to the stroke, and means for adjusting the amount of motion of said carriage.

A feed for punch presses and the like, comprising a link, one end of which is connected eccentrically to the shaft of the press, and free to oscillate about and perpendicular to the axis of that shaft, the other end of the link being slidably mounted on a guide causing it to move in a line parallel to the axis of the shaft, and being free to oscillate in and at right angles to the axis of the guide, a second link, one end of which is pivoted to the first link between the ends thereof, the other end of which is fixed to the bed and free to oscillate about the axis of the guide, a work carriage, means for'attaching the same to the free end of the first link, means for varying the timing of the feed with reference to the stroke, and means for adjusting the amount of motion of said carriage.

A feed for punch presses and the like, comprising a link, one end of which is connected eccentrically to the shaft of the press and free to oscillate about and perpendicular to the axis of that shaft, a guide for the other end of the link attached to the bed of the punch press in a line parallel to the axis of the shaft, the link being slidably mounted on such guide and. being free to oscillate in and at right angles to the axis of the guide, a work carriage, means for attaching the work carriage to the sliding end of the first link, means for varying the timing of the feed with reference to the stroke, and means for adjusting the amount of motion of the work carriage.

A feed for punch presses and the like, comprising a link, one end of which is connected eccentrlcally to the shaft of the press and free to oscillate about and perpendicular to the axis of that shaft, and a second link one end of which is pivoted to the first link, the other end being attached to the bed of the press and free to oscillate about an axis parallel to the axis of the shaft, a
carriage for the work, means to connect the 'carriage to the free end of the first link, means for varying the timing of the feed with reference to 1 the stroke, and means for adjusting the amount of motion of the work carriage.
21. A feed for punch presses and the like, comprising a link, one end of which is connected eccentrically to the shaft of the press, and free to oscillate about and perpendicular to the axis of that shaft, the other end of the link being slidably mounted on a guide causing it to move in a line parallel to the axis of the shaft and being free to oscillate in and at right angles to the axis of the guide, a second link, one end of which is pivoted to the first link between the ends thereof, the other end of which is fixed to the bed and free to oscillate about the axis of the guide, a work carriage, means for attaching the same to the free end of the first link, means for varying the timing of the feed with reference to the stroke, and means for adjusting the amount of motion of the work carriage.

A feeding device for an intermittently operating machine having a drive shaft, comprising a link, means for connecting one end of the link to the shaft of the machine to cause said end to oscillate in a plane normal to the shaft, a guide for the other end of the link attached to the machine in a line parallel to the axis of the shaft, the
link being slidingly mounted in' the guide, a :reciprocatory work carriage, means for attaching the work carriage to the sliding end of the link,
means for varying the timing of thefeed with reference to the stroke, and means for adjusting the stroke of the work carriage. r

A feeding device for an intermittently operating machine having a rotary drive shaft comprising a link, means for drivingone end of the link from the drive shaft through a to and fro movement, a guide for the other end of the link attached to the machinein a line parallel 'to the axis of the shaft, said guide causing the end of 24, A feeding device for an intermittently opcrating machine having a drive shaft'mounted' in, a frame, said feeding device comprising a link having one end interconnected to the shaft for movement through a circular path, a guide extending parallel to the axis of the shaft for guiding the opposite end of the link, and a second link having'one end pivotally mounted upon the frame of the machine, the opposite endiof the second link being pivotally attached to amedial portion of the first link cooperating therewith to 7 translate the rotary motion imparted to the one end of the first link .into reciprocatory motion at the opposite end thereof.
