At its lower end the shaft 23 carries another worm 24 which meshes with a worm 25 mounted on the drive shaft 26 which is rotatable in bearings 21 provided therefor in the frame half 5. At its front end the drive shaft 26 projects into the front head portion I! where it is equipped with a driver pinion 28, the purpose of which will become apparent as the description progresses.
A cutting element supporting and translating slide or carriage 29 is supported in the slide guides l4 and is movable back and forth in said guides for imparting back and forth or reciprocatory movement of translation to the cutting element in a manner and for a purpose later to be described. The carriage 29 is retained in the guides M by removable plates 39 and is equipped at its front end with upper and lower bearing extensions 3|, and at its rear end with two diametrically oppositely disposed cam ears 32 providing an axially extending cam portion in the nature of a crown cam having the cam surfaces thereof which form the projections and depressions or notches bearing approximately 90 angular relation.
The cars 92 of the cam portion extending axially from the rear end of the slide carriage 29 are adapted to engage and cooperate with similar cars 33 or crown cam portions projecting from a spur gear rotor 34 which is freely rotatable about the axis of the shaft i and adapted to be driven by the gear 35 secured upon the drive shaft 26. It will be understood that by reason of the Worm gear connections hereinbefore described the relatively rapid rotation of the main shaft l5 will be transmitted in. the form of very slow rotation to the drive shaft 26 and the crown cam portion 33 and hide advancing pinion 28 to which it imparts motion.
The slide carriage 29 affords rotative hearing, as at 36, for a shaft section 3'! which is axially alined with the main shaft 15, and by reason of the spline connection between these shaft sections l5 and 3'! they in effect constitute a single extensible shaft, the portion 31 being capable of longitudinal movement back and forth with the slide 29. At its front end the shaft section 31 projects from the carriage 29 and is equipped with a crank disc 98 having an off center an ifriction crank roller 39 which operates in a cross slot in a slide block 49 which supports and imparts vertical or axial reciprocation to the cutting element carrying bar 4!. The bar 4! is free to rotate about its axis in the block 49 but is held against longitudinal movement relative to the block by collars 42.
At its lower end the cutter bar is provided with any suitable form of clutch in which the cutter element 43 may be removably secured. In this disclosure the hide cutting element is in the nature of a flat, slender, or narrow element having two cutting edges merging in a central piercing or penetrating point.
The cutter bar 4| has ordinary reciprocable bearing in the lower carriage extension 3! but in the companion or upper extension .35 said bar passes through a bearing sleeve 44 which is held against longitudinal movement relative to the carriage by a collar 45 encircling and secured to its lower end by an enlargement just above the upper extension 3! and which is equipped with two diametrically oppositely disposed stop lugs 48 as best shown in Figures 3 and 8 of the drawings. The sleeve extends a considerable distance above the enlargement and the cutter bar accommodating opening in this extended portion of the sleeve is squared or otherwise non-circular to cooperate with a non-circular portion 41 of the cutter bar in permitting said cutter bar to reciprocate longitudinally Within the sleeve but assuring rotation of said sleeve about its axis with the cutter bar.
An abutment collar 48 is secured to the upper end of the vertical extension of the sleeve 44 and beneath this collar a coil spring 49 encircles the sleeve extension and has its respective ends so engaged with pins 59 projecting from said collar and a winding ratchet collar 51 encircling the sleeve extension below the spring as to cause the spring to constantly tend to rotate the sleeve 44 and the cutter bar 4i about their common axis. See Figures 3 and 4.
The winding ratchet collar 5! is equipped with four teeth disposed in equidistantly spaced relation about the axis of the collar and opposed, at opposite sides, as shown in Figures 1 and 4 of the drawings, by a pair of oppositely effective spring energy holding and restoring fingers 52 which are pivotally supported as at 53 upon the rearmost slide guide l4 and held against the opposite edges of the ratchet collar by a retractile spring 54.
A stop and release member 55 is pivotally supported upon the upper bearing extension 3| of the slide 29 in position for having the stop releasing fingers 55 thereof alternately engage with the stop lugs 49 projecting from the enlargement of the sleeve 44. The member 55 includes an actuator arm extension 51 which projects between and is adapted to engage one or another of a pair of spaced adjustable abutment stops 58 at the end of movement of translation of the slide or carriage 29 in a given direction. It will be noted that while the stop lugs 46 are diametrically oppositely disposed the fingers 56 of the stop and release member 55 bear 90 angular relation. By reference to Figure 8 of the drawings, it will be understood that as the carriage 29 advances forwardly in the direction of the arrow, and has approximately completed its movement in that direction, the actuator arm 57 will engage the foremost abutment 58 and the position of the stop and release fingers 56 shown in full lines will be changed to the position shown in dotted line thus releasing the then held or stopped lug 46 and permitting it, the sleeve 44 and the cutter bar 4|, to rotate 90 about their common axis in clockwise direction and then to be stopped by the remaining finger 55 which has been projected into the path of movement of the lug 45 as shown in dotted lines in Figure 8. At the conclusion of movement of the carriage 29 in the opposite direction the arm 5'! will engage the rearmost abutment 58 and reverse the position of the fingers 56 or in other words return them to the position illustrated in full lines in Figure 8 thus releasing the lug 46 and permitting the cutter element assembly to turn from the dotted line position to the full line position illustrated in Figure 8.
It will be observed by reference to Figure 4 of the drawings that one or another of the ratchet collar-engaging fingers 52 will always be in engagement with one of the teeth of said collar thus holding the tension stored in the coiled spring 49. It will be apparent also that as the cutter element assembly is rotated 90 about its axis as above described some of the tension stored in the spring 49 will be released in effecting this "a driven gear 63.
movement. The spring tension thus lost is restored and the spring always retained at desired efficiency in the following manner. Each time the carriage 29 moves forwardly or rearwardly it carries the cutting element assembly including the ratchet collar with it and as the ratchet collar 5| is moved back and forth between the fingers 52 one or the other of the fingers is always active to impart a degree of rotation to the collar tending to wind or store energy in the spring 49, and this restoration of energy is always sufficient to compensate for losses incident to the rotation of the cutting assembly about its axis.
The frame halves 5 and 9 have open portions at the front which cooperate to form an opening 59 through which access may be had to the cutting element assembly. See Figures 1 and 2. The
opening 59 is accessible through a removable plate 60.
Each of the frame halves 5 and 5, in the front portions thereof which together form the head portion 1 l, carries a hide advancing or feed roller El mounted on a shaft 62 journaled in the respective frame half portion and equipped with When the frame halves are assembled as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, the gears 63 of the respective rollers mesh with a centrally mounted driver gear 64 rotatably supported on the stud shaft 65 secured in the frame half 5, and to this driver gear slow rotation is imparted by the driver pinion 28 hereinbefore referred to. In this manner the feed rollers BI are rotated slowly and in constantly timed relation to the sliding or translatory movement of the carriage 29 and the hide cutting assembly movable therewith.
A brake cam 66 is fixed to or formed integral with the crown cam and gear 33, 34 and includes two diametrically oppositely disposed high points or maximum brake applying surfaces as shown in Figures 1 and 7 of the drawings. A brake arm 68 is pivotally supported at 69 on the frame half 5 and includes an overhanging flange portion 10 and a brake shoe H for cooperating with a the cam surfaces. The arm 68 is pressed against the cam by an adjustable compression spring 12 and exerts a pressure thereon which serves to govern the rotation of the cam portion and prevent accelerated relative movement of the parts at any time. As the high points of the cam portions 32 and 33 are passing, at which time the greatest tendency for accelerated movement of the cam and gear unit 33, 34 or the carriage 29 occurs, the brake arm will then be in engagement with one of the high points of the cam and will therefore be exerting its maximum braking efficiency in order to effectively overcome this tendency.
The hide advancing or feed rollers 6| are opposed by a work plate 13 supported upon a rocker arm 14 pivoted as at 15 to the frame. The plate 13 is tiltably supported on said arm, being pivotally supported thereon at 16 and H, the pivots being arranged with their axes in right angular relation so as to in eifect form a universal tilt mounting for said plate. A compression spring 18 engages the arm 14 and yieldably presses the plate '13 and the hide supported thereon against the rollers 6|. A push rod 19 attached to a suitable treadle (not shown) may be utilized to separate the plate from the rollers for the purpose of insertion and removal of a hide.- The plate is provided with a longitudinal opening 80 disposed between the rollers 6| as shown in Figures 9 and'll, said opening being of a shape and size for accommodating the translatory movement of the cutting element and also for permitting freedom of hairs of the hide in the cutting area so that they may be deflected by the cutting element.
Brackets 8| are secured to the carriage 29 and rods 82 extend from the brackets and enter receiving sockets 83 in the foremost slide guides 14. The rods 82, are encircled by the coils of compression springs 84 which are interposed between the brackets 81 and the bearing, l4 and serve always to urge the carriage 29 rearwardly thus constantly holding the crown gear portion 32 thereof in engagement with the companion cam equipment 33.
At its upper end the cutter bar 4| is extended through a longitudinal opening in the frame and equipped with a knurled head 85. This equipment makes it possible to manually manipulate the cutter bar to hold it stationary while manipulating the cutting element securing clutch, to manually change the angular position of the element, or to manually restore tension in the spring in case of any emergent condition of use.
In operation the rapid rotation imparted to the shaft l5 will be transmitted in the formofrapid vertical or-axial reciprocation to the cutter bar 41 by the disc 38 and roller 39. The rapid rotation of the shaft l5 will likewise be transmitted in the form of relatively slow rotation to the engagement with the cam portion 32 the carriage 29 will be reciprocated or translated slowly back and forth moving the reciprocating cutting element slowly back and forth across the path of the advancing hide.
The result of slowly advancing the hide and slowly translating the cutting element back and forth across the path of advancement of the hide in constantly timed relation, is the formation of a continuous zig-zag or notched-line out, each zig x and each zag y of such out being formed by a rapid succession of individual narrow cuts formed by the cutting element as illustrated in Figures 9 and 10. In forming this cut the fiat of the narrow cutting element always alines with the line of cut so as to assure a smooth edge out. This is made possible because any given unit or distance of hide advancement is attended by a like unit or distance of translatory movement of the cutting element and consequently the piercing or penetrating point of the flat cutting element will always strike the hide in the desired line of cut as shown in Figure 10, and at the completion of the succession of cuts forming each zig or zag, and while the cutting element is elevated out of contact with the hide, the element is rotated 90 about its axis as hereinbefore described so as to aline the flat thereof with the zig or zag next to be cut.
The number of cutting element reciprocations, or in other words the number of successive individual cuts, utilized to form the individual zigs and zags of the continuous line out may vary but always are relatively narrow so as to enable the narrow element to pass between the hairs defleeting but not cutting the same.
In diagrammatic Figure 10 the heavy dots serve to indicate the individual points of penetration and the crossed light lines therefore illustrate what might be termed units of movement, of advancing movement with respect to the-hide, and
of movement of translation with respect to the cutting element. It will be observed that the points of penetration are spaced apart a distance less than the width or major cross sectional area of the cutting element. Thus positioned a continuous line out is assured. When the piercing or penetrating points are spaced apart a distance less than half the width of the element as shown in Figure 10, one cutting edge alone of the element will be effective in forming the line out in a given direction.
In this particular disclosure the cutting assembly is rotated step by step, one-quarter of a turn at a time, always in one direction, and thus, in this particular disclosure, as shown in Figures 9 and 10, a given edge of the element forms a zig, the element is turned 90 about its axis, and the same edge forms a zag upon the completion of which the element is again turned 90 about its axis and the other edge will then be effective to form a Zig and a zag in a like manner and so on.
It is of course to be understood that the details of structure and arrangement of parts may be variously changed and modified without departing from the spirit and scope: of my invention.
I claim:--
1. In a fur cutting machine, the combination of a narrow fiat reciprocating cutting element having two cutting edges merging in a central penetrating point, and means to bring about relative movement between a fur bearing hide and said element to cause the element to successively penetrate the hide at intervals spaced less than the major cross sectional area of said element whereby one or the other of said edges will form a succession of cuts conjointly forming a continuous line out depending upon the direction of said relative movement.
2. In a machine for cutting fur bearing hide, the combination of a narrow flat reciprocable cutting element having two cutting edges merging in a central penetrating point, means to reciprocate the element to cause it to repeatedly penetrate the hide along the desired line of cut with the flat thereof always presented in the line of cut whereby the individual cuts will conjointly form a continuous smooth edged line out, means for shifting the relative positions of the hide and the reciprocating cutting element to cause the line cut to follow a zig-zag path, and means to control the position of the cutting element to cause first one of the edges to cut a zig and a zag and then the other edge to cut a zig and a zag.

, the combination of a narrow flat reciprocable cutting element having two cutting edges merging in a central penetrating point, means to reciprocate the element to cause it to repeatedly penetrate the hide along the desired line of cut with the flat thereof always presented in the line of cut whereby the individual cuts will conjointly form a continuous smooth edged line cut, means for shifting the relative positions of the hide and the reciprocating cutting element to cause the line out to follow a zig-zag path, and
' of a hide advancing means, a reciprocating narrow flat cutting element having two cutting edges merging in a central penetrating point and disposed with the fiat thereof presented in angular relation to the direction of advancement of the hide, means to impart translatory movement to the element back and forth across the path of advancement of the hide, and means for altering the angular relation of the element at the conclusion of each back and forth movement thereof to aline the fiat thereof with the succession of cuts next to be made, said angular relation alteration being effected by rotation of the element about its axis always in the same direction.

In a fur notching machine, the combination of a hide advancing means, a reciprocating narrow flat cutting element having a cutting edge and a penetrating point and disposed with the fiat thereof presented in 45 angular relation to the direction of advancement of the hide, means to impart translatory movement to the element back and forth across the path of advancement of the hide, and means including a spring and energy storing and releasing means actuated by movement of said element translating means for turning the element 90 about its axis at the conclusion of each back and forth movement there- 6. In a fur cutting machine, a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element, means for reciproeating the element in its support, spring means tending to rotate the element about its axis, means to secure the element against rotation, and means for at times releasing said securing means to permit the element to rotate a predetermined degree.

In a fur cutting machine, a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element, means for reciprocating the element in its support, spring means tending to rotate the element about its axis, means to secure the element against rotation, means for at times releasing said securing means to permit the element to rotate a predetermined degree, and means for restoring energy in the spring means following each release of said securing means.

In a fur cutting machine, a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element, means for reciprocating the element in its support, spring means tending to rotate the element about its axis, means to secure the element against rotation, means to impart translatory movement to the element supporting means back and forth between fixed limits and means active at the end of the translatory movement in each direction for releasing said securing means to permit the element to rotate a predetermined degree.

In a fur cutting machine, a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element, means for reciprocating the element in its support, spring means tending to rotate the element about its axis, means to secure the element against rotation, means to impart translatory movement to the element supporting means back and forth between fixed limits, means active at the end of the translatory movement in each direction for releasing said securing means to permit the element to rotate a predetermined degree, and means for restoring tension in the spring following each release of said securing means.
10. In a fur cutting machine, a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element, means for reciprocating the element in its support, spring means tending to rotate the element about its axis, means to secure the element against rotation, means to impart translatory movement to the element supporting means back and forth between fixed limits, means active at the end of the translatory movement in each direction for releasing said securing means to permit the element to rotate a predetermined degree, and means active during the movement of translation for restoring ten sion in the spring following each release of said securing means.
11. In a machine for cutting fur bearing hide, the combination of a narrow fiat reciprocable cutting element having two cutting edges merging in a central penetrating point, means to reciprocate the element to cause it to repeatedly penetrate the hide along the desired line of cut with the fiat thereof always presented in the line of cut whereby the individual cuts will conjointly form a continuous smooth edged line out, means for shifting the relative positions of the hide and the reciprocating cutting element to cause the line out to follow a zig-zag path, and means to control the position of the cutting element to cause first one of the edges to cut a zig and a zag and then the other edge to cut a zig and a zag, said last named means including devices to cause the cutting element to turn about its axis at the completion of each zig or zag and while free of contact with the hide to properly aline the flat thereof with the zig or zag next to be cut.

In a fur cutting machine, a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element, means for reciprocating the element in its support, spring means tending to rotate the element about its axis, means to secure the element against rotation, means for at times releasing said securing means to permit the element to rotate a predetermined degree, and adjustable devices for assuring release of said securing means only when said element is out of contact with the hide.
13. In a fur cutting machine, a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element, means for reciprocating the element in its support, spring means tending to rotate the element about its axis, means to secure the element against rotation, means to impart translatory movement to the element supporting means back and forth between fixed limits, and means active at the end of the translatory movement in each direction for releasing said securing means to permit the element to rotate a predetermined degree and including adjustable devices for assuring release of said securing means only when said element is out of contact with the hide.
14. In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the element, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a stop lug, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and a relatively stationary member whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a release and stop finger releasably engaging the stop lug, and means operable during translatory movement of the bar for releasing said finger to permit the bar to rotate about its axis,

In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the bar for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the bar, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a stop lug, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and a relatively stationary member whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a release and stop finger releasably engaging the stop lug and having a projecting actuator arm, and a pair of adjustably spaced abutments one of which is en gageable by said arm at the conclusion of the translatory movement of the bar in one or the other direction for effecting release of said finger to permit the bar to rotate about its axis.

In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the bar for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the bar, means for efiecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a stop lug, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and a relatively stationary member whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a release and stop finger releasably engaging the stop lug, means operable during translatory movement of the bar for releasing said finger to permit the bar to rotate about its axis, and means for retaining a condition of stored tension of the'spring.

In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the bar for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the bar, means for eifecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a pair of diametrically oppositely disposed stop lugs, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and a relatively stationary member whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a shiftable member having release and stop fingers projecting therefrom in 90 angular spaced relation and alternately engageable with the sleeve lugs for the purpose of releasing the sleeve to permit the bar to rotate about its axis and for stopping such rotation after it has proceeded 90, and means operable during translatory movement of the bar for shifting said shiftable member.

In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the bar for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the bar, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a pair of diametrically oppositely disposed stop lugs, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and a relatively stationary member whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a shiftable member having release and stop fingers projecting therefrom in angular spaced relation and alternately engageable with the sleeve lugs for the purpose of releasing the sleeve to permit the bar to rotate about its axis and for stopping such rotation after it has proceeded 90, means operable during translatory movement of the bar for shifting said shiftable member, and means for retaining a condition of stored tension of the spring.

In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the bar for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the bar, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a pair of diametrically oppositely disposed stop lugs, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and a relatively stationary member whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a shiftable member having release and stop fingers projecting therefrom in 90 angular spaced relation and alternately engageable with the sleeve lugs for the purpose of releasing the sleeve to permit the bar to rotate about its axis and for stopping such rotation after it has proceeded 90, and a shifter arm whereby shifting of the shiftable member may be effected, and a pair of adjustably spaced abutments one of which is engageable by said arm at the conclusion of the translatory movement of the bar in one or the other direction for shifting said shiftable member.

In a fur cutting machine, the combination of a reciprocating narrow fiat cutting element having two cutting edges merging in a central penetrating point, means to bring about relative movement between a hide and said element to cause the individual narrow cuts formed by the element to conjointly form a continuous line out, and means for turning the element about its axis to cause first one then the other of its cutting edges to be effective in forming said line cut.
22. In a fur cutting machine, the combination of a reciprocating narrow flat cutting element having two cutting edges merging in a central penetrating point, means to bring about relative movement between a hide and said element to cause the individual narrow cuts formed by the element to conjointly form a continuous Zig-zag or notched-line out, and means for turning the element about its axis just prior to the starting of the succession of cuts which conjointly form each zig or zag of the line cut for properly alining the fiat of the element with the particular g or zag next to be made and for causing first one then the other of the edges of the cutting element to be effective in forming said line out.

In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the bar for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the bar, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a stop hug, a ratchet collar rotatable on the sleeve, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and the ratchet collar whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a release and stop finger releasably engaging the stop lug, means operable duringi translatory movement of the bar for releasing said finger to permit the bar to rotate about its axis, and means for rotating the ratchet collar to retain tension in the spring.
24. In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the bar for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the bar, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a stop lug, a ratchet collar rotatable on the sleeve, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and the ratchet collar whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a release and stop finger releasably engaging the stop lug, means operable during translatory movement of the bar for releasing said finger to permit the bar to rotate about its axis, and a pair of oppositely directed actuating members engageable with opposite sides of the ratchet collar as it moves back and forth between them during translatory movement of the bar and serving to rotate said collar and retain tension in the spring.
25. In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the bar for re-' ciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the bar, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a stop lug, a ratchet collar rotatable on the sleeve, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and the ratchet collar whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a shiftable member having release and stop fingers engageable with the sleeve lug for releasing said lug to permit rotation of the sleeve and for engaging said lug for terminating said rotation and including a shifter arm whereby the shifting of said member may be effected, a pair of adjustably spaced abutments one of which is engageable by said arm at the conclusion of the translatory movement of the bar in one or the other direction for shifting said member, and a pair of oppositely directed actuating members engageable with opposite sides of the ratchet collar as it moves back and forth between them during translatory movement of the bar and serving to rotate said collar and retain tension in the spring.

In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender flat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the element, means for effecting the translatory movement,
"a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a pair of diametrically oppositely disposed stop lugs, a ratchet collar rotatable on the sleeve, a-
coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and the ratchet collar whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a shiftable member having release and stop fingers projecting therefrom in 90 angular relation and alternately engageable with the sleeve lugs for the purpose of releasing the sleeve to permit the bar to rotate about its axis and for stopping such rotation after it has proceeded 90, a shifter arm whereby shifting of the shiftable member may be effected, a pair of adjustably spaced abutments one of which is engageable by said arm at the conclusion of the translatory movement of the bar in one or the other direction for shifting said shiftable memher, and means for rotating the ratchet collar step-by-step to retain tension in the spring.

In a fur cutting machine, a bar carrying a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for supporting the element for reciprocation along its axis and for rotation about its axis and for translatory movement back and forth, means for reciprocating the element, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a pair of diametrically oppositely disposed stop lugs, a ratchet collar rotatable on the sleeve, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and the ratchet collar whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar. a shiftable member having release and stop fingers projecting therefrom in 90 angular relation and alternately engageable with the sleeve lugs for the purpose of releasing the sleeve to permit the bar to rotate about its axis and for stopping such rotation after it has proceeded 90, a shifter arm whereby shifting of the shiftable member may be effected, a pair of adjust-ably spaced abutments one of which is engageable by said arm at the conclusion of the translatory movement of the bar in one or the other direction for shifting said shiftable member, and a pair of oppositely directed actuating members engageable with opposite sides of the ratchet collar as it moves back and forth between them during translatory movement of the bar.

In a fur cutting machine, a frame, a bar mounted for reciprocatory and translatory movement having a chuck for removably receiving a slender fiat cutting element having a penetrating point, means for reciprocating the bar, means for effecting the translatory movement, a stop sleeve rotatable with the bar and having a stop lug, a coil spring encircling the sleeve and having its ends in engagement with the sleeve and a relatively stationary member whereby to tend to rotate the sleeve and the bar, a release and stop finger releasably engaging the stop lug, and means operable during translatory movement of the bar for releasing said finger to permit the bar to rotate about its axis, said bar having a portion extending without the confines of the frame to permit hand manipulation.

In a fur notching machine, a frame, a carriage slidably mounted in the frame, a bar carrying a slender hide cutting element reciprocably supported on the carriage for movement at right angles to the sliding movement of the carriage, a longitudinally extensible bar reciprocating shaft journaled in part in the carriage, reciprocating means connecting said shaft and said bar, means for rotating the shaft, means for reciprocating the carriage, and hide advancing means for moving the hide at right angles both to the direction of reciprocation of the carriage and the direction of reciprocation of the bar.
30. In a fur notching machine, a frame, a carriage slidably mounted in the frame, a bar carrying a slender hide cutting element reciprocably supported on the carriage for movement at right angles to the sliding movement of the carriage, a longitudinally extensible bar reciprocating shaft journaled in part in the carriage, reciprocating means connecting said shaft and said bar, means for rotating the shaft, means for reciprocating the carriage including a crown cam and a follower projecting from the carriage and engaging the cam, braking devices for preventing accelerated movement of the cam or carriage as the follower passes over a high point of the cam, and hide advancing means for moving the hide at right angles both to the direction of reciprocation of the carriage and the direction of reciprocation of the bar.

In a fur notching machine, a frame, a carriage slidably mounted in the frame, a bar carrying a slender hide cutting element rcciprocably supported on the carriage for movement at right angles to the sliding movement of the carriage, a longitudinally extensible bar reciprocating shaft journaled in part in the carriage, reciprocating means connecting said shaft and said bar, means for rotating the shaft, means for reciprocating the carriage including a crown cam and a follower projecting from the carriage and engaging the cam, braking devices for governing rotation of the cam and including m ans for increasing the braking action each time the follower passe over a high point of the cam to prevent accelerated movement of the cam or carriage at that interval, and hide advancing means for moving the hide at right angles both to the direction of reciprocation of the carriage and the direction of reciprocation of the bar.

In a fur notching machine, a frame, a carriage slidably mounted in the frame, a bar carrying a slender hide cutting element reciprocably supported on the carriage for movement at right angles to the sliding movement of the carriage, a longitudinally extensible bar reciprocating shaft journaled in part in the carriage, reciprocating means connecting said shaft and said bar, means for rotating the shaft means for reciprocating the carriage including a crown cam rotatably surrounding said shaft and a complementary cam portion extending from the end of the carriage and engageable with the cam, and hide advancing means for moving the hide at right angles both to the direction of reciprocation of the carriage and the direction of reciprocation of the bar.

In a fur notching machine, a frame, a carriage slidably mounted in the frame, a bar carrying a slender hide cutting element reciprocably supported on the carriage for movement at right angles to the sliding movement of the carriage, a longitudinally extensible bar reciprocating shaft journaled in part in the carriage, reciprocating means connecting said shaft and said bar, means for rotating the shaft means for reciprocating the carriage including a crown cam rotatably surrounding said shaft and a complementary cam portion extending from the end of the carriage and engageable with the cam, hide advancing means for moving the hide at right angles both to the direction of reciprocation of the carriage and the direction of reciprocation of the bar, and means driven from said shaft for imparting slow movement to said cam and said hide advancing means in constant timed relation.

In a fur notching machine, a frame, a carriage slidably mounted in the frame, a bar carrying a slender hide cutting element leciprocably supported on the carriage for movement at right angles to the sliding movement of the carriage, a longitudinally extensible bar reciprocating shaft journaled in part in the carriage, reciprocating means connecting said shaft and said bar, means for rotating the shaft means for reciprocating the carriage including a crown cam rotatably surrounding said shaft and a complementary cam portion extending from the end of the carriage and engageable with the cam, braking devices for preventing accelerated movement of the cam or carriage as the cam and carriage cam portion pass high point engagement, and hide advancing means for moving the hide at right angles both to the direction of reciprocation of the carriage and the direction of reciprocation of the bar.
35. In a fur notching machine, a frame, a carriage slidably mounted in the frame, a bar carrying a slender hide cutting element reciprocably supported on the carriage for movement at right angles to the sliding movement of the carriage, a longitudinally extensible bar reciprocating shaft journaled in part in the carriage, reciprocating means connecting said shaft and said bar, means for rotating the shaft means for reciprocating the carriage including a crown cam rotatably surrounding said shaft and a complementary cam portion extending from the end of the carriage and engageable with the cam, braking devices for governing rotation of the cam and including means for increasing the braking action each time the cam and carriage cam portion pass hi h point engagement to prevent accelerated movement of the cam or cam portion at that interval, and hide advancing means for moving the hide at right angles both to the direction of reciprocation of the carriage and the direction of reciprocation of the bar.
36. In a machine for cutting fur bearing hide, the combination of a narrow flat reciprocable cutting element having a cutting edge and a penetrating point, means for supporting the hide with the flesh side toward the cutting element and the hairs thereof depending for free deflection, means to reciprocate the element to cause it to repeatedly penetrate the hide along the desired line of cut with the flat thereof always presented in the line of cut whereby the individual penetrations will enter between the hairs deflecting but not cutting them and conjcintly form a continuous smooth edged line cut, and means for shifting the relative positions of the hide and the reciprocating cutting element to cause the line out to follow a zig-zag path.
37. In a fur notching machine, the combination of hide advancing means, a reciprocable narrow flat cutting element having a cutting edge and a penetrating point and disposed with the flat thereof presented in angular relation to the direction of advancement of the hide, means for supporting the hide with the flesh side toward the cutting element and the hairs thereof depending for free deflection, means to reciprocate the cutting element to cause it to repeatedly penetrate the hide between the hairs thereof deflecting but not cutting them, means to impart translatory movement to the element back and forth across the path of advancement of the hide, and means actuated by movement of said element translating means for altering the angular relation of the element at the conclusion of each back and forth movement thereof to aline the flat thereof with the succession of cuts next to be made.
