Abstract

323,504. Powell, A. D., and Bradbury & Sons, Ltd., J. Sept. 28, 1928. Dynamometers; systems for testing motor vehicles.-Means for testing brakes on vehicles comprises a detachable effort indicator adapted to be used with one or more appliances for supporting and rotating the wheels to be tested. Wheel supporting rollers 4, 5 are mounted on spindles 3 carried by brackets from a base plate 1. The roller 5 is driven by chain and sprocket gearing housing in a frame 11 from a spindle 9, suitable means being provided for adjusting the tension of the chain. At one end the platform 1 is provided with a ramp 12 connected by links' to the spindle 3 of the roller 4 so that it may be folded up when not in use. To the spindle 3 of the roller 5 is pivoted a frame 14 having a handle 16 and wheels 15 by means of which the device may be lifted from the ground and run on the wheels 15. When pressure is taken off the handle 16 the device rests firmly on the ground and a car-wheel may be run thereon. One form of torque effort indicator, Figs. 3, 5, comprises a circular casing 17 having a hub 18 adapted to fit the squared spindle 9. The end 19 of a spiral spring 20 is secured to the hub the other end 21 being attached to a lever 22 freely pivoting on extensions of the hub. A detachable handle is provided on the lever 22 so that it may be employed on either side of the car. In each side of the casing 17 is an arcuate slot 25, in which slides a maximum indicator 26. The lever 22 is cut away at the part 31 on each side of the casing 17 to receive the indicator 26 and the scale is calibrated to indicate the position of the indicator 26 when the lever and spindle 9 are turned to move the wheel against the influence of the brakes. In a modification the wheel rests on an endless belt connecting the rollers. In a further modification, the wheels rests on a platform which is supported by rollers on the base 1 and is driven by rack and pinion and chain gear from the handle 22 so as to move the vehicle wheel.
