Loose stitches, causing formation of. - An attachment for imitating hem-stitching by sewing two pieces of fabric together by loose stitches has a ply-separator with a thread slot and stepped upper surface in advance of the presser-foot. The attachment comprises a sheet-metal member 12 secured to the presser-bar 5 by tongues 2 and the usual screw 4. Riveted to the arm 13 of the member 12 at 14 is a sheet-metal member 16. The presser-foot 11 is carried by the member 12 and the ply-separator 18 by the member 16, Fig. 2. The rear edge 19 of the ply-separator is flush with the rear edge 20 of the member 16 and both have a slot 23 for the needle 6. The other edge 21 of the separator is stepped in relation to the edges 19, 20. In operation, the two pieces of fabric e, u are separated by the member 17, 18, Fig. 6, just before they come under the presser 11. The needle passes down the slot 23 to form the loose stitches 27 of the finished article, Fig. 8. The tension of the threads is adjusted so that the under thread lies on the lower surface of the fabric fold as shown at 26, Fig. 8. The inclination of the upper ply at the stitching point, by feeding slightly more of the upper ply than the lower for each stitch, compensates for the tendency of the feed dogs 8 to crowd or pucker the lower ply.
