Abstract

322,318. M. P. A. Wireless, Ltd., and Smyth, H. C. H. Nov. 17, 1928. Winding-machines; stop-motions. -In a machine for winding a number of electric coils simultaneously the traverse-mechanism comprises a pair of oppositely-rotating electromagnets 29, 30, Figs. 1 and 2, loosely mounted on a lay shaft 28 the screwed end 34 of which actuates the traverse rod 48, a disc armature 33 keyed to the shaft 28 being arranged between the magnets 29, 30 which are alternately energized to engage the armature 33 and thereby rotate the shaft 28. The electromagnets 29, 30 are of the pot type and are driven in opposite directions by spur-wheels 31, 32 through gearing 35 - - 42 from the main shaft 20. The traverse rod 48 on which is mounted a guiding unit 69, 70, 71 for each winding head, is secured to the end 47 of a slipper 45 which is reciprocated by a nut 43 engaging the screw 34, contacts c<1> on the member 45 engaging contacts c on adjustable stops 51, 52 mounted on a rod 50 at the end of each traverse to reverse the drive through the magnets 29, 30. The magnet circuits are made and broken through pivoted arms coacting with mercury cups or through the action of a spring- controlled contact breaker c<1>, Fig. 6. Each winding head comprises a standard 59 provided with two bobbin supports 26, each bobbin being driven by gear wheels 24, 25 from the shaft 20. Fibre or leather friction discs 60, 61 are secured to the wheels 25, 24 to minimize shock when the wheels are brought together while the wheels are maintained in mesh by a pin 63 on a bracket 62, Figs. 10 and 11, engaging the face of a disc 64 angularly adjustable on a spindle 65 to the other end of which is secured a ratchet-wheel 66. The wheel 66 is actuated by a pawl 67 on the rod 48 and on completion of winding a stop 68 lifts the pawl 67 and the pin 63 engages a slot' 63<a> in the disc 64, a spring 59<a> acting to separate the wheels 24, 25. The extension 70 carrying the guide-roller 71 is adjustable on the arm 69' while in a modification a screwed rod 73, Fig. 13, on the rod 48 coacts with an arm 72 pivoted' at 75 and slotted at 74 to secure small variationsin traverse.
