Abstract

322,298. Electro-Mechanical Brake Co., Ltd., and Catlin, L. A. Oct. 27, 1928. Fluid-pressure; skid.-An extra handle for operating the brake valves of tramway or other electric vehicles is provided in addition to the controller handle, with the object of enabling a single set of valves to be actuated by either handle independently. To the spindle f of the controller handle c, Fig. 1, is keyed a pair of cams d, e which operate respectively the admission valve a through the roller g and pivoted lever h, and the release valve b through roller i mounted on pivoted lever j, spring n and the extra handle k, which is pivoted coaxially with levers h, j. Handle k operates the release valve directly, and the admission valve through the medium of the projection l which engages the lever h. Another projection m is provided on the extra handle, which projection engages the lever h when the controller handle is moved to open the admission valve, thus preventing the extra handle opening the release valve. If the controller handle jams with the release valve open, the latter can be closed by using the extra handle to compress the spring n. In a second arrangement only one cam d, Fig. 2, is mounted on the controller handle spindle f, actuating the release valve b through the roller t mounted on lever s, and the spring n, which is fixed between lever s and extra handle k as in Fig. 1. The admission valve is actuated by the extra handle only, while the release valve can be operated by either handle independently. The release valve is opened when the controller handle is turned in either direction for applying power to the wheels, or for applying the electromagnetic brakes, while if the controller handle jams, the extra handle can be used for applying the air brakes by compressing spring n thus closing the release and opening the admission valve. In an arrangement for operating wheel brakes and track brakes, the air pressure valves for the two brakes may be arranged in line so that the operating lever first actuates the wheel brake and then the track brake, provision being made, if desired, for releasing the wheel brakes before the track brakes are applied.
