Coating webs.-Long strips of flexible material, such as celluloid film, are coated with liquid by being drawn over a narrow-mouthed trough containing the liquid, the strip being kept out of contact with the walls of the trough but in contact with the liquid meniscus. Fig. 1 shows a trough with walls 17, 18 forming a narrow orifice over which the film is guided by a roll 15. Liquid is supplied to the trough through a tube 21 into the open end of which enters a supply-pipe 23 having a control-valve 24. The leading lip 171 of the trough is slightly higher than the trailing lip 181, which is slightly concave to ensure the even distribution of the liquid. The trough is provided with hot-water jackets 172, 182.
