Cabinets.-In a cardfiling cabinet 1, Fig. 1, in which the cards are arranged in overlapping formation in shallow drawers, the cabinet is mounted in a frame 5 so as to be capable of vertical movement for bring- ing the required drawer to the working level. The cabinet 1 is guided by rollers running in the corners of angle-bars 3 forming the frame 5, and is supported by a balance-weight 10 guided on the frame 5 by rollers 14 and connected to the cabinet 1 by ropes 6 passing over pulleys 8. The sides of the frame 5 may be covered with sheet-metal, and the strip 16 covering the front side is provided with an opening 17 at the desired level so as to allow a drawer to be withdrawn. Narrow extensions 18, 19 of the opening 17 are provided to facilitate bringing the required drawer into register with the opening 17. In order that the openings 18, 19 may be closed, in the extreme upper and lower positions of the cabinet 1, a steel-metal strip 21 is fixed to the upper edge of the cabinet, and a similar strip 22, Fig. 8, normally depending from the lower edge of the opening 19 by means of a lip 22<1>, is moved upwardly by a pin 23 on the lower edge of the cabinet engaging a pin on the strip 22. The lip 22<1> and a similar lip 24 on the upper edge of the opening 18 also serve to close any drawers which are slightly projecting, so that they do not foul the strip 16. To support a drawer in its withdrawn position, a hinged plate 25 is provided with stays 26 which can be laid flat against the strip 16. A plate 27 hinged to or slidable out from the plate 25 may be provided for holding writing materials. In place of a hinged plate 25, a U-shaped frame which slides out of the frame 5 may be employed, with a writing table below it, supported similarly to the plate 25. The cabinet 1 may be secured in its lowest position by a lock 31. Rubber buffers 33, 34 are provided on the top and bottom of the cabinets. An endless rope may be provided for raising and lowering the cabinet. A number of frames 5 may be arranged side by side and if desired, rigidly connected together.
