Angular bending; formers.-In an apparatus for bending rods, bars, r girders, &c., particularly steel joists for supporting colliery arches, of the kind comprising rollers carried by a radial arm rotatable round a former secured on a table or bedplate, the radial arm is adjustably secured to a carrier which is pivoted on a rotatable vertical shaft and is prevented from tilting during the bending operation. A former 2, provided with inward flanges 2<b>, 2<c> and an outward flange 2a is secured through slots 1<a> and bolts to a bedplate 1. Bending rollers 14, 15, 16 which have flanges to engage under the flange 2a and over the end of the girder 3 to prevent it from rising during bending, are carried by the head 4a of an arm 4 which is radially adjustable by a screw 12 in a carrier 7 pivoted by a pin 8 to a shaft 6 rotated by a pinion 27 and a rack 28 operated by a pair of hydraulicallyoperated rams.. The forward roller 14 is independently adjusted on the head by a screw 19 and the head carries an arm 23 having a roller 21 running between the flanges 2<b>, 2<c> to prevent pivotal movement of the arm on the pin 8 during bending. This roller keeps the bending rollers out of contact with the table and may be vertically adjustable by a screw 24 to lift the head vertically to suit girders of different height and may be also adjustable in slots on the head in the direction of the work to adjust to girders of different widths. The flanges 2<c> and 2<a> are discontinued on the straight parts of the former to allow the arm to be tilted to facilitate insertion or removal of the work. The tilting may be effected by an hydraulic ram or by a crank 22, which may also be used to place the former and work in position. The rear end of the work is clamped to the former by an eccentric lever 26.
