Abstract

319,893. Collier, A. J., Heywood, F., and Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd. Aug. 27, 1928. Granulating. - Granular solids are obtained from molten or liquid materials, for instance calcium or ammonium nitrate or a mixture of ammonium nitrate and calcium carbonate, bv collecting the material on a plurality of rods or spikes arranged on a rotary member and kicking it off into a cooling chamber in which it is solidified while in contact with gas only. When solutions are under treatment water may be removed by passing warm air &c. through the cooling chamber. The material may be collected from a pool, or as shown, molten material supplied to an inclined steam-jacketed trough 2 from a hopper 1 through a valve 3 may be collected by a rotary brush 6 the spikes of which are deflected slightly on contacting with the trough, and the material flicked into a cooling chamber 8 up which is passed a current of cold air. Large or small granules may be obtained by varying the shape and thickness of the spikes &c. According to the Provisional Specification, the rotary member for collecting the material may be fitted with projections as opposed to rods or spikes.
