Fish ladders and passes.-In order to provide for the passage of salmon over high obstacles 1, such as weirs, waterfall and dams, a trapping cage 6 is fitted in a tank 5 between a basin 3 and a series of pools 4 through which a current of water from a conduit 8 round a baffle 9, flows. The cage 6 has a watertight tray-like bottom and grating sides and a funnel-shaped entry 12 at the down-stream end through which fish may enter the cage which is then lifted and traversed to a position above the dam or the 'like and lowered into the water when an outlet door is opened automatically to allow the fish to escape. The movements of the cage may be automatically controlled. In the case of electrical operation a time-switch is used to cause a cycle of operations at predetermined intervals which may he varied as desired. For the passage of kelts and smoults down stream a series of compensating pools 21 communicate by a tunnel 20 with a series of pools 18 in stepped formation, the last of which opens into a pool 4 through a funnel-like aperture.
