Abstract
319,668. Storch, F. Sept. 25, 1928, [Convention date]. Electromagnets.-Magnets, magnetic work-holders, magnetic separators, &c. are formed of a number of electromagnets with their poles embedded in nonmagnetic material which forms the greater part of the face of the magnet. The nonmagnetic material is also of insulating material and is such that the work easily adheres to it. Suitable materials are asbestos and certain fibrous materials with a binding medium such as natural or artificial resin. Figs. 1 and 3 show an arrangement of rectangular cores 8 with exciting coils 9 mounted on a base-plate 5 and poles 2 protruding through a plate 1 of moulded material. The plates 1, 5 may be connected by bolts 6 and a casing 3 of sheet zinc &c. The magnet cores may have three legs with coils on one or all of the legs arranged for alternating or direct current. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement for a magnetic separator. The magnets 8 and their coils 9 are embedded in a block 12 of iron &c. arranged to rotate on a shaft 10. Plates 7 of nonmagnetic material are arranged round the block and secured by cornerpieces 17 and bolts 18. The pole-pieces 2 of the magnets may project from the plates 7 as shown for dealing with coarse material, or may be flush with them for treating fine powders. An end plate is provided carrying slip-rings for making and breaking the magnet circuits as the device revolves. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also the use of insulating material having the same coefficient of expansion as the material of the pole-pieces. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
