Abstract
319,649. Lusse Bros., Inc., (Assignees of Lusse, R. J.). Sept. 25, 1928, [Convention date]. Vehicle collision-guards.-A bumper for electrically driven motor vehicles used in amusement parks consists of a rubber cushion member, surrounding the vehicle on the exposed portion of which is mounted a flexible steel band. The platform 2 of the amusement car 1 has mounted on it the bumper 9 which comprises an annular rubber cushion member 11, a protective flexible steel band 12, a flexible supporting member 13 of leather for the steel band, and a supporting channel member 14. The channel member 14 is provided with a vertical wall 15 which is bolted to the adjacent outer edge 5 of the car platform 2, and a pair of outwardly projecting spaced flanges 16, 17 which respectively engage inner portions 18, 19 of horizontal upper and lower sids 21, 22 of the cushion member 11. An inner side 23 of the cushion member 11 engages the vertical wall 15 of the channel member 14, and is provided with a circumferential recess 24. The cushioning effect of the member 11 is increased by the provision of a plurality of apertures 25 and is further increased for head-on collision by having the front end portion 29 and the relevant apertures 25 of increased dimensions. The flexible member 13 is rigidly secured to the steel band 12 by rivets 35, Fig. 4. The adjacent ends 38, 39 of the steel band 12 are held in abutting relation by pairs of screws 41, 42 which engage tapped apertures in a block 43 which fits a recess 34. The invention may be modified by having a cushion member having a core of sponge rubber and without apertures, and by placing at the front end of the vehicle and behind the cushion member either a cushion block or cushion springs.
