Abstract

317,967. Gurney, W. E. R. July 23, 1928. Linear-dimension gauges. - A machine for recording the gauge and cant of a rail track has a trolley T on one end of which is fitted a pair of single flanged wheels W<1>, W<11>, running on an axle A, the other end being adapted to be supported by a platelayeres' trolley or other convenient means by lugs F, F. One of these wheels W<11> can slide on the axle and is pressed by a spring S to keep the flange w<11>, which is of rectangular cross-section, against the rail head r. The extent of slide of the wheel is restricted by an adjustable collar S' on the axle. The sliding movement of the wheel moves in unison a graph rod m which works a style m<1> recording a graph on a moving sheet of paper G. A frame p<1> supports a pendulum P" which oscillates in a plane transversely to the track and which moves a graph rod N working a style n' recording on the moving sheet of paper, the graph rod being formed so that it exerts a damping effect on the pendulum. A small spring controlled plunger, not shown, operated by a Bowden wire is employed to mark the record sheet to locate positions on the track. The graph paper is driven through worm-gear or a single toothed wheel or cam from the axle of the machine by a toothed wheel engaging holes at the edge of the graph paper, a friction contact spring allowing the speed of revolution of the spool-holding wheel to vary with the diameter of the spool. The wheel flanges are lubricated by lubricating boxes V from which tubes V<1> pass to make sliding contact at their ends V" with the sides of the wheel flanges.
