Abstract
317,774. Macmillan, N. May 21, 1928. Aircraft coupled in pairs or trains. -An aerial torpedo or bomb a to be discharged from an aeroplane f is provided with aerofoil supporting surfaces, the ratio of the superficial area of which to the total weight of the bomb is substantially the same as the ratio of the superficial area of the. wings of the aeroplane to its total weight. It results from this that the load of bombs has little effect on the flight capacity of the aeroplane other than a slight reduction of speed due to increased head resistance. The bomb may be released when the aeroplane is gliding more or less directly towards the target, whereupon the bomb will continue in the same line. The bomb may have a slightly smaller ratio of weight to supporting surface to facilitate " taking off," and may then be released upwardly by causing the aeroplane to travel slightly faster for a given gliding angle or on a steeper path for a given minimum speed. The bomb may be fitted with controlling devices operated by a gyroscope or an aneroid device, or by " wireless " or light beams; and may also be provided with propelling means. The bomb may be used for attack, or for the supply of ammunition, stores, or mails. The bomb is placed above or below the aeroplane, for example on struts b on the aeroplane or on the bomb, and is held in place and released by means of bolts d. when the bomb is suspended below the aeroplane, a supporting hook is used in addition to the releasing bolt.
