Abstract
316,640. Howard, Ltd., J. & F., and Jones, L. W. May 1, 1928. Multiple - furrow ploughs; adjusting and lifting parts; wheels, arrangement of. - Lifting and lowering mechanism for ploughs &c. comprises a crank associated with gearing adapted to be operated when desired by the travel of the implement to enable it to be moved angularly for effecting relative movement between the travelling wheels and the frame or part carrying the plough bodies &c., the gearing comprising an internally toothed ring rotatable around the axis of a travelling wheel and engaged by planet pinions in mesh with a gear wheel operatively connected to the wheel, the pinions being carried by a part adapted to impart rotational movement to the shaft carrying the crank. The plough shown is provided with a rear wheel 2 carried by a vertical pillar 3, a furrow wheel 4 carried by a cranked axle 5, and a land wheel 6 carried by a cranked axle 7. The lifting-mechanism forms a self-contained unit in a casing mounted on the cranked part of the axle 7. The gearing in the casing 8 operates a crank shaft 9 the crank pin 11 of which is connected by a link 12 to a relatively fixed pin 13 on the lower end of a depth-regulating lever 14. A gear wheel 17 on the axle 7 is driven for the land wheel 6 by dogs 22 and gears with planet pinions 18, 19 meshing with an internally toothed ring 20 rotatably mounted on the wheel hub 21. The planet pinions 18, 19 are mounted on a flanged gear wheel 26 meshing with a pinion 27 forming part of a disc 28 fixed on the crank shaft 9. The casing 8 comprises a sleeve surrounding the lower part of the axle 7 and is clamped to the upwardly projecting part. An end cover forms a support for the outer end of the double crank arm 10. A roller 31 carried by a pivoted locking-member 32 engages with one or other of two notches 29, 30 in the disc 28. The member 32 is also provided with a projection 34 to engage with one of a number of notches 35 in the toothed ring 20. The arrangement is such that the locking- member 32 releases the ring 20 when it locks the disc 28 fixed on the shaft 9, and locks the ring when it releases the disc, the gearing being inoperative when the ring 20 is free to rotate. The locking-member 32 is operated by a lever 36 linked to an arm 38 moving with a lever 39 adapted to be pulled by a cord to move the lever 36 against the action of a spring 41. The cranked axle 7 is adjustably connected with the axle 5 by an arm 42, a link 43, a notched quadrant 44, and a lever 50. An arm on the axle 5 is connected by a link 46 to a bell-crank lever 47 linked to the top of the pillar 3 so that the rear part of the frame 1 may rise and fall with the front part. A spring 49 assists in moving the axle 7 angularly and thus lifting the frame 1. In a modification, ,% single crank arm 10 is employed and the cover enclosing it is dispensed with.
