Abstract

315,495. Hurrell, G. C. April 25, 1928. Emulsions, making.-Aqueous bituminous emulsions of a fine degree, of dispersion and stabilized by colloidal clays such as bentonite are prepared by dispersing the bituminous material in water containing a small quantity of stabilizer or protective colloid or of alkali with the aid of a colloid mill and mixing the unstable dispersion produced with an aqueous suspension of clay, using mild agitation. Examples describe the dispersion of 66 parts of Venezuelan bitumen at 100‹ C. or bitumen of melting point 100‹C. at 110‹ C. in 34 parts of aqueous solutions, at 80‹ C., containing 5 per cent of sodium oleate, and 1 per cent of casein together with 10 per cent of borax respectively. The aqueous dispersions produced are, in each case, stirred into 34 parts of a 5 per cent suspension of clay preferably at a temperature substantially equal to that of the dispersions to produce stable emulsions.
