Abstract

315,434. Soc. of Chemical Industry in Basle. July 13, 1928, [Convention date]. Yarns &c., treating with liquids. - Textile materials made of vegetable fibres are immunized to direct dyeing dyestuffs by treating them with maleic anhydride, if desired in the presence of a diluent and a catalyst. The treated textiles have a strong affinity for basic dyes. In examples (1) cotton yarn is immersed in fused maleic anhydride for half-an-hour and is then centrifuged or squeezed and rinsed, the product is scarcely affected by substantive dyes but is strongly dyed by basic dyes; catalysts, such as copper sulphate, are without noteworthy effect on the product but shorten the operation, and (2) cotton is treated with maleic anhydride in glacial acetic acid for about four hours; the product has similar properties to those of example 1.
