Abstract

314,924. Whatmough, W. A., and Weslake, H. April 2, 1928. Spray carburettors. - A fuel nozzle of the kind provided with a diffuser tube having calibrated submerged orifices for fuel and aerating air is provided with an enlargement at its upper end having one or more air ports directed either at rightangles to or towards the direction of flow of the fuel, the outlet passages for the aerated fuel being directed into the main air stream out of the of the nozzle. As shown in Fig. 1 the nozzle comprises a diffuser tube 7 provided with calibrated orifices 5<a>, 9 for fuel and air, an intermediate tube 2, and an outer tube 12 provided with air inlets 17, the outer tube 12 being furnished with an enlargement 14 provided with outlet passages 15 and with air inlets 16 in alignment with ducts 11 in the head of the tube 7. The air supply to the inlets 16, 17 may be taken from outside the main air intake 1. In a modification, the main air intake and enlargement 14 are situated horizontally at right-angles to the diffuser tube, and the enlargement 14 is provided with an axial air inlet delivering across the outlet of the diffuser tube in addition to the air inlets directed at an angle to the axis of the enlargement. In a further modification, the enlargement consists of an inverted cone provided with an outlet for the aerated fuel on its upper surface, an inverted conical baffle being inserted in the outlet to direct the fuel away from the axis of the nozzle. In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the enlargement comprises a rectangular member 27 extending across the main air intake 1 and supplied with fuel through an orifice 39 and air through conduits 36, 38, the aerated fuel passing through the conduit 37 into a longitudinal channel 28 down the centre off which extends a baffle 29. Air is drawn into the channel 28 through apertures 33, and the rich mixture thus produced passes out through slots 30 formed between the sides of the baffle 29 and the walls of the channel 28.
