Vacuum or low-pressure apparatus, arrangements of.-A device for enabling a D.C. load such as a motor 16 to be supplied from a multiphase A.C. supply source comprises a plurality of singlephase discharge tubes 7, 8, 9 having oxide cathodes maintained incandescent by one or more transformers 12, the anodes 11 of the discharge tubes being connected through switches 6 and fuses 5, but without the interposition of a transformer, to terminals for connection to the supply source. A regulating resistance 14 may be inserted between the output terminals and the point of connection to the cathodes of the valves.
