Frequency, changing. - The cathode R of a thermionic valve or other discharge tube is heated by the higher harmonics produced by a transformer T, whose core is highly saturated, the lower harmonics and fundamental being eliminated by a rejector circuit L2, C2. A rejector circuit L1, C1 prevents the higher harmonics from returning to the alternating supply n, n, while lagging currents may be prevented from reaching the supply by making the reactance of C1 larger than that of L1, or by providing a byepass condenser Cp. The transformer T may be replaced by a choke, Fig. 2 (not shown), the harmonics being passed through a normal transformer.
