Abstract

313,924. Schering-Kahlbaum Akt.- Ges. June 19, 1928, [Convention date]. Medicines for internal use.-The hormone of the anterior lobe of the hypophysis, which is found also in the blood, urine, fµces, male and female sexual glands, and placenta, is prepared by treating an aqueous preparation of these organs or liquids with compounds of the alkaline earths or of the heavy metals to precipitate salts and ballast materials, and then separating the hormone in the usual manner by adding an organic solvent to the residual aqueous solution. According to an example urine is concentrated, acidified with acetic acid, filtered, treated by addition of concentrated barium chloride solution, to precipitate impurities, and the filtrate treated with sodium sulphate to remove excess of barium, again filtered, and treated with three times its volume of methyl alcohol to precipitate the hormone. The hormone may be further purified by repeated solution in water and precipitation with alcohol. In further examples-(1) concentrated urine is treated with lead acetate, excess of which is removed by means of sulphuretted hydrogen; (2) finely divided placenta suspended in water is treated with calcium hydroxide and then with carbon dioxide to precipitate calcium carbonate; and (3) anterior lobes of hypophysis are finely divided in a colloid mill and suspended in acidified water, the mass filtered, and the filtrate treated with barium chloride solution. In each of these further examples the hormone is finally separated from the solution in the same manneras in the first example.
