Abstract

313,805. Baer, C. J., and Jeffries, C. r. Aug. 13, 1928. Endless-band propellers.-Relates to endless-band propellers for boats and consists in providing a number of independent driving chains arranged side by side on each side cf the boat with means for selectively driving any chain on either side in any direction longitudinally. The units are protected by enclosure and guards and the tension of the chains and depth of immersion of the units are adjustable. The paddles may be perforated. The propellers are mounted in a framework supported by beams 1, 2, Fig. 1, from the side of the boat A and are protected by louvred side panels, 57 and end gratings 53. Three sets of propellers are used on each side. The endless chain 11, Fig. 3, moves over a driving front sprocket 9 and an adjustable rear sprocket 12. and carries a number of perforated paddles 14. The sprocket 9 is driven by a chain extending into the engine house B and clutches and gears are utilized to control the direction of running of either sprocket 9. Beneath the chain 11 is a cable 25 which supports it on the idler rollers 26 and lower adjustable sheaves 27. For separately adjusting the tension of the cable it is led over an adjustable and spring mounted idler sheave 39. Rudders 60 are placed at the front and rear of each propeller group.
