Abstract

313,325. Austin, A. O. June 25, 1928. Moulds ; processes.-Ceramic articles are produced by depositing slip about a yielding core adapted subsequently to be removed from the formed article. The core, which is of a definite shape, may comprise a central support and a covering of yielding material. As shown, a two-part mould, consisting of porous mould sections 11 backed with metal 13, is furnished with a core comprising a central tube 16 covered with wax portions 17, 18 in turn covered with shaped rubber envelopes 19, 20. A flange 22 locates the core. Slip is introduced through the core via apertures 24; alternatively, or in addition, it may be introduced through feed tubes 25 in the mould. After filling the mould, pressure is applied through the tube, 16 and openings 26 to expand the members 19, 20 to drive off excess water and compact the material. The wax layers 17, 18 are softened by passing steam &c. through the tube 16 or by electrical heating, and the tube 16 is withdrawn. The envelopes 19, 20 may remain in the article during drying and are removed by stretching. The members 17, 18 also may be made of rubber.
