Abstract
313,231. Wintringham, T. H. March 21, 1928. Driving-gear.-A quantity of oil f is interposed between the power piston a and the connecting rod h driving the crank shaft. A plunger e attached to the piston a works in. a tube d<1> and acts on the oil; the connecting rod is attached to the piston g, which may be ot larger diameter than the plunger e so that the piston a may have a long stroke. At the end of the out-stroke the plunger e enters a tube d<3> with a restricted outlet k. The return stroke of the piston is effected by the action of the crank shaft through the piston g and the oil column. To prevent excessive pressure rise in the oil an expansion chamber m is connected to the tube d; a spring- pressed piston in the chamber allows oil to flow from the tube at a determined pressure, the oil returning to the tube when the pressure therin falls. To obtain a delay in the movement of the power piston at the end of the out-stroke, a plunger q is driven by the cam r to vary the volume of the tube d in the required manner. A filler tube l is provided. One power piston may act on several columns of liquid or on one column subdivided.
