Abstract

231,990. Porritt, O. W., and Wilkinson, T. B. Feb. 28, 1924. Turning-gear.-A hydraulic starting or turning device for internal-combustion engines comprises one or more pump cylinders B having plungers d actuated by a single lever F, the cylinders B being connected to a single larger cylinder H in which is a plunger H<1> connected by rack and pinion gearing to the engine shaft. As shown in Fig. 2, the rod h of the plunger H<1> carries a weight W and has rack teeth in engagement with a pinion l on a shaft L<1> carrying a sprocket wheel L, which is connected by a chain to a sprocket wheel on a clutch member in engagement with the engine shaft. At starting, a valve D, in the partition C between the upper and lower compartments. of the chamber A, is opened by depressing a rod f sliding jn the lever F, allowing the plunger H<1> to be returned by the weight W to its lowest position. In a modification, the plungers d are actuated by eccentrics on a shaft driven by a handle through gear wheels. In a further form, Fig. 5, for turning the shaft of a gas or oil engine part of a revolution for each stroke of the operating handle, the plunger d of a single pump B is competed to a long lever F<1> having wedge-shaped projections f<1>, f<2> for engagement with a sliding rod t controlling a valve D<1> between the chambers A<2>, H<2>. The valve is thus opened at the end of each pumping stroke, allowing the plunger H<1> to be returned by the spring S, and is closed at the end of the return stroke. Rack teeth h<1> on the plunger rod h gear with a wheel P driving a wheel P<1> on the engine shaft by means of a pawl p. One of the Provisional Specifications describes a form in which a plunger such as H<1> is mounted on a hollow tube having means for engagement with a spirally grooved rod, which is rotated by axial movement of the plunger; the rod is connected to the engine shaft by a clutch, flexible driving means, and a pinion gearing with a toothed fly-wheel or other wheel on the engine shaft. The other Provisional Specification describes a form in which a plunger such as H<1> operates the rods of a number of plungers working in cylinders of still larger diameter and expelling fluid into a final cylinder to operate a plunger connected by gearing to the engine.
