Pyridine and piperidine alcohols.-Pyridine compounds containing a CH2.CO.R group (R represents hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl or aryl) in the 2-position or in both 2-and 6-positions are treated with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenating catalyst, such as nickel or metals of the platinum group, whereby the carbonyl group or groups is or are reduced to the carbinol stage and then the pyridine nucleus becomes hydrogenated. By choosing the working conditions, the hydrogenation may be stopped at the carbinol stage. According to the example, 2-phenacyl-pyridine (see Specification 311,387) is hydrogenated at ordinary temperature and pressure using a nickel catalyst to give 2-phenylhydroxyethyl-pyridine; on further hydrogenation employing platinum as catalyst, or by using increased pressure and raised temperature with a nickel catalyst, 2- phenylhydroxyethyl-piperidine is produced. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes the choice of hydrogenation conditions such that only one keto group of the diketo compound becomes reduced to the carbinol stage. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
